Feud claims life

SWABI, May 10: An old feud between two families resulted in the killing of a person at Zaida area here on Tuesday, police said.

Israr Mohammad, brother of deceased Arif Mohammad has registered an FIR at Zaida police station against Sher Rehman and Siraj Mohammad, alleging that the cause of the killing of his brother was a dispute between the two families. He alleged that his brother was on his way home when Sher Rehman and Siraj Mohammad opened fire and killed him on the spot. The two accused managed to escape. —Correspondent

Road guide launched

PESHAWAR, May 10: Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has reiterated that the government’s decision of bifurcating works and services department has proved fruitful as the quality of work has improved and several fresh engineers have been inducted in the department.

He was addressing the launching ceremony of “Road Guide-2011” held here under the auspices of Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter. The book has been written by Eng Zahid Arif and it encompasses all aspects of road engineering starting from land acquisition, road geometrics and design, material, road maintenance, road safety, surveying and environment assessment and implication.

The chief minister acknowledged the services of engineering community in the development of the province. —Bureau Report

Protest against price hike

PESHAWAR, May 10: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) youth wing staged a protest demonstration here on Tuesday against price hike and demanded sustainability in market rates of different items.

The protesters were holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against price hike, lawlessness and unemployment. They also shouted slogans against the government policies and termed it a complete failure.

The PTI Youth Wing leaders including Amjad Akbar Orakzai, Shah Fahad, and Ihtisham Afridi were leading the protesters. — Bureau Report

Judicial probe demanded

MANSEHRA, May 10: The lawyer’s fraternity has demanded establishment of a judicial commission under the Supreme Court chief justice to probe the operation carried out by the American forces in Abbottabad.

At a meeting held here on Tuesday, the district bar members said that the American forces breached the UN charter and challenged the sovereignty of Pakistan. They termed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden a great hero of Islamic world and said that he waged the jihad against the unlawful US hegemony and aggression in the Muslim world.

They said that the lawyers should also launch a movement to pull the country out of the crisis. — Correspondent

Boy assaulted

MARDAN, May 10: A 14-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by a school watchman within the limits of city police station here on Tuesday.

Police officials said that watchman of Pak-American School assaulted a boy when he was cutting grass for his cattle in the nearby fields. The city police have registered a case against the watchman on the complaint of the boy’s father and started search for the accused. — Correspondent

JTI to hold conference

PESHAWAR, May 10: The Jamiat Tulba Islam (JTI) has expressed grave concern over the prevailing law and order situation and termed the government policies a complete failure.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, JTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president Hafiz Arshad said that his organisation had decided to hold a three-day conference from May 11 to 13 at its provincial secretariat in order to devise future line of action in this regard.

He said that central amir of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Maulana Fazlur Rehman and many other religious scholars, intellectuals, JTI central and provincial leaders would address the conference. — Bureau Report

Training workshop

LANDI KOTAL, May 10: A three-day training workshop on effective journalism organised by Internews, a media organization, ended here at the press club.

About 20 local journalists affiliated with different media organisations participated in the workshop which was officiated by Peshawar-based senior journalist Iqbal Khattak. During the workshop, journalists were briefed about basic ethics in journalism and commitment to the profession along with how to achieve success in the said field. — Correspondent
