4 of a family killed on road

CHAKWAL, May 9: Four members of a family were killed and seven other persons injured in a traffic accident near here on Sunday night.

Zahida Bibi, of Sehgalabad village, along with her three daughters and a son was going to Rawalpindi in a rented car. As the car reached near Kohnoor Mills, it rammed into a passenger van due to speeding. As a result, Zahida, her two daughters - Salma Bibi, 35, Iram Shabana, 24, - and son Mohammad Waqas, 28, died on the spot.

The third daughter, Summan Bibi, 12, and Arshad, the driver of the car, were injured. Seven persons travelling in the passenger van also sustained injuries and were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital.

Man murdered

FATEHJANG, May 9: A man was murdered in Kot Fateh Khan over some money dispute, some 16-km from here in jurisdiction of Fatehjang Police Station on Monday.

According to police, Niaz Ahmed and Noor Mohammad were business partners.

Niaz Ahmed after murdering Noor Mohammad managed to escape from the scene.

Fatehjang police reached the spot and shifted the body to THQ hospital for post-martem. Police have registered case against the culprits and started the investigation. No arrest has been made so far. — A Correspondent

MUZAFFARABAD, May 9: A man shot himself dead after killing his wife and father-in-law in the southern Sudhnoti district on Monday due to a marital discord, police and witnesses said.

According to details, Shahida Kosar was married to Mohammad Sarfraz who was living with his in-laws in Nakkar village.

However, after a dispute with his in laws he took his wife to some other place.

The woman was brought back by her father, Sawar, but her husband took his wife with him. However, the father again brought his daughter back to his house due to which Sarfraz nurtured a grudge against the family.

On Monday morning, when Shahida came out of her parents’ abode to fetch water, Sarfraz waiting for her fired and killed her on the spot. On hearing the noise of gunshots, Shahida’s parents rushed out but Sarfraz sprayed them with bullets as well before shooting himself dead.

The wounded duo was removed to Pallandari hospital where Sawar died of his wounds.—Staff Correspondent

Jail warden himself in jail

ATTOCK, May 9: The head warden of the district jail became a prisoner on the charge of allegedly facilitating an inmate in getting drugs and a cellphone inside the premises, it has been learnt.

Police sources said the jail administration had lodged a complaint with to the Attock City police two days back stating that the head warden, Nazir Ahmed, had allegedly facilitated supply of 115 gram hashish and a mobile phone to a under-trial prisoner involved in a double-murder case.

The police registered a case against the accused official and arrested him on Saturday.

When contacted, a police official said the accused was sent to jail on judicial remand on Monday. — Correspondent

Polio vaccination

ATTOCK, May 9: A four-day anti-polio campaign started on Monday across the district.

In a press release, the health department said that special mobile teams have been set up to administer drops to the children at door-to-door besides taking others necessary arrangements for the campaign, which will be continued till May 12.

Moreover, religious and prayer leaders were also being engaged in this anti-polio campaign to convince the people during their prayer sermons about administration of anti-polio drop to their under-five children, he said.—Correspondent

Killers of student leader

CHAKWAL, May 9: The Muslim Students Federation (MSF) has demanded that the police should arrest the killers of its district president Basit Raza who was gunned down in a clash with a rival group on Saturday.

In a meeting held on Sunday evening, the provincial president of MSF, Maqbool Ahmad Khan, said if the killers were not arrested within a few days, the students body would observe a strike against the police.

When contacted, the police investigating officer, Pervez, said the killers of Basit Raza would be arrested within a couple of days.

“One of the accused, Zahid, a resident of Panjain village, is also involved in many other cases,” the IO maintained.

He said the killers would be brought to book soon. — A Correspondent

Smuggled goods seized

ATTOCK, May 9: The police here on Monday foiled a bid to smuggle foreign goods, including clothes and cigarettes worth Rs5 million, from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Punjab.

On a tip-off, the police tried to stop a Lahore-bound bus (LWA-6374) coming from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa near Hazro interchange. However, the driver sped away. When the police chased the vehicle, the alleged smugglers opened fire on it. As the police intercepted the bus near Qutba village on G.T. Road, a brief encounter took place after which the smugglers escaped, leaving the vehicle behind.

The police recovered about 306 cartons/bags of foreign-made clothes, cigarettes, perfumes, cosmetics and other items worth about Rs5 million from the bus.

The police said they handed over the seized items to the customs authorities for further action.—Correspondent
