Man shot dead

MARDAN, May 8: A man was shot dead by unidentified persons at Mardan new bus stand. He was going to his place of work in Faisalabad, local transporters and police officials said on Sunday.

The officials of city police station quoted Dost Mohammad, father of the slain person, as saying his son, Ayaz Mohammad, was killed by unknown men after he got off from a passenger van.

He informed the officials that they had no enmity with anyone. The police, however, registered a murder case against unknown killers.—Correspondent

Boy electrocuted

CHITRAL, May 8: A twelve-year-old boy was electrocuted in Prayeet village situated on Booni road, some 40kms off here on Sunday.

The boy was identified as Intikhabuddin who was studying in a primary school. The incident took place when boy was passing near a fallen electric pole carrying live wires.

The villagers complained that the Small Hydel Development Organisation (SHYDO) had failed to replace the wooden electric poles with the ones made of steel.

They said the wooden poles often fell to ground when it rained posing a grave danger to the lives of the people and animals.—Correspondent

Row defused

SWABI, May 8: A row between All Teachers Association and EDO, education ended on Sunday after DCO, Syed Abdul Jabar Khan, and DPO, Mohammad Ijaz Khan, held talks with the warring parties and made them to burry the hatchet, sources told Dawn on Sunday.

The rivalry erupted between the EDO and teacher leaders two weeks back over the transfer of a teacher. ATA leaders and EDO exchanged hot words after which the latter got an FIR registered against the teachers’ leaders.

The sources said president of All Government Employees Coordination Council, Aslam Khan, and president of All Teachers Association, Abdul Latif, held a meeting in the DCO office where the DCO and DPO played a key role in settling their rivalry.—Correspondent

Relief for flood survivors

LAKKI MARWAT, May 8: A humanitarian organisation distributed cheques and relief items among the flood survivors on Sunday.

The Al-Khidmat Foundation, a humanitarian wing of Jamaat-i-Islami, arranged a function wherein the flood affected people were provided with compensation cheques, food items and crutches for the physical challenged people.

Among others the foundation’s president Abdul Ghaffar Faryadi, secretary general Liaqat Ali, information secretary Mohammad Jibran, JI’s district chapter amir Malik Meer Shah, secretary general Sabz Ali Naveed and Shabaab-i-Milli district chapter president Malik Jehanzeb Hasan attended the event.

The JI leaders alleged the government had failed to rehabilitate the flood survivors, forcing the humanitarian bodies to come forward and launch relief operation to assist the affected people.—Correspondent

Free medical camp

PESHAWAR, May 8: Directorate Health, Fata Services, held a seven-day free medical camp in South Waziristan Agency.

According to a press statement issued by Fata directorate on Sunday, the medical camp was held in Chagmali, Siplotai, Madinamor, Cotkey and Kaurtant areas, supervised by Director Health, Fata Services, Dr Fawad Khan.

About 6,725 patients were examined by a qualified team of doctors and free medicines and diagnostic facilities were provided to them, while serious patients were referred to nearby hospitals.—APP

Water supply scheme

PESHAWAR, May 8: Speaker, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Karamatullah Khan Chagharmati said on Sunday due to unfavourable conditions major share of KP budget was being used to curb militancy.

He, however, said the government had initiated a number of social welfare projects including women university, Guragi girls college and Northern bypass.He was addressing a public gathering after inaugurating a water supply scheme at village Terai Payan in his constituency here on Sunday.

Mr Chagharmati said construction of Northern bypass was in full swing and concerted efforts were being made to connect Regi Model Town with Motorway. He announced Rs10 million for Terai Payan road and Rs1 million for sports ground.—APP

Thalassaemia Day

PESHAWAR, May 8: Fatimid Foundation observed World Thalassaemia Day on Sunday holding a special function for thalassaemia patients.

A large number of parents of thalassaemia patients, students and general public attended the function.

Administrator Fatimid Foundation, Peshawar centre, Col (retd) Afzal Hassan Khan, Dr Sajjad Haider and others addressed the function.

The speakers highlighted the importance of the observation of the thalassaemia day at world level. Afzal Hassan said due to lack of awareness the number of patients was increasing, adding, failure in preventive measures could bring dangerous results.—APP

Tonga race

PESHAWAR, May 8: A thrilling tonga race was held on Charsadda road here on Sunday. Thousands of spectators enjoyed the race standing on both sides of the road. There were multi-colour carts (tongas), which delighted the spectators.

MPA Malik Tamas Khan who was the chief guest lauded Minister for Sports Syed Aqil Shah for promoting traditional games in the province.

He said the tonga and donkey-cart races were a key part of Pakhtuns’ tradition, which were still enjoyed by the people of urban and rural areas.He assured the people that the government would utilise all its resources in involving the youth in healthy activities.

The chief guest gave away cash prizes of Rs100,000 to the winners.—APP

Road projects

PESHAWAR, May 8: Provincial Minister for Ushr and Zakat Haji Zarshaid Khan on Sunday said work on Qadro-Mira road costing Rs10 million was underway that would benefit 50,000 people.

Addressing a public meeting at Maneri Payan, the minister said work on Rs4 million Naso-Banda road was also underway. The farmers and growers would largely benefit from these schemes.

He said government was well aware of people's problems and more funds would be allocated for new schemes for Swabi district in the upcoming budget.—APP
