LAHORE, April 26: A 50-year-old employee of the Punjab Highways Department was killed after his suspended colleague opened fire at him in the main office building situated on Lake Road on Tuesday.

Mozang police said head clerk Khalid Farooq Anjum was shot to death by Saqlain Shah, who is gurdawar in the department, in the presence of other staff.

Quoting Anjum's colleagues, police said Shah suspected that Anjum, father of four and a resident of Sheikhupura district, first got him suspended and now was a hurdle in the way of his restoration.

They got into an argument before the shooting, a police official said, adding that Shah fired shots thrice but only one bullet hit Anjum in the chest.

Anjum died minutes after he was admitted to Mayo Hospital.

CROSSFIRE: An alleged robber and a constable were injured in a crossfire on Ferozpur Road near Ichhra Police Station on Tuesday.

Police said three Mohafiz Force men asked two motorcyclists to stop for checking, but one of them opened fire.

The firing left constable Munir injured. One of the motorcyclists was also injured when police retaliated. The injured motorcyclist who was later identified as Ahmad and constable Munir were admitted to a public hospital.

The other motorcyclist fled. Student's murder:

Factory Area police claim to have arrested a cousin of a 10th class student two weeks after the latter was allegedly killed by the former in the name of honour.

Shahzad, 17, was found dead in the drawing room of his Madina Colony house on April 11. He had been murdered with a sharp-edged weapon.

Cantonment Division SP (Investigation) Amin Bukhari said Shahzad's brother Ijaz had not nominated anybody in the FIR because his family was unaware of the motive behind the murder.

The SP said police visited the crime scene and questioned Shahzad's family, relatives and neighbours about the incident.

Finally, police 'marked' Shahzad's cousin Sajid Ali for interrogation and took him into custody secretly. Shahzad and Ali's families are living in the same house.

During the interrogation, the SP said, Ali told the police that he killed Shahzad for his affair with his (Ali's) sister.

Also, the SP said, Ali turned against Shahzad after he did not allow his girlfriend into his drawing room. Ali drugged Shahzad, injured his head with a sharp-edged weapon and strangled him, the SP said. Police have seized the weapon used in the incident and got Ali's physical remand from a local court, the SP added.
