Two children killed on road

MINGORA, April 14: Two children were killed and fourteen wounded when the vehicle they were boarding hit railing of a bridge in Matta tehsil on Thursday.

The vehicle packed with sixteen wedding guest children from Droshkhela hit the railing of the bridge at Asharay in Matta tehsil due to over-speeding. As a result Saima Bibi and Shah Alam were killed on the spot while fourteen others were wounded. The injured children were taken to Matta hospital. Nine of the inured, four critical, were referred to DHQ hospital Saidu Sharif. —Correspondent Man shot dead

SWABI, April 14: Exchange of fire between two parties over a piece of land claimed life of a man and injured three others on Thursday, police said.

Officials said the incident occurred in Manki village of Chota Lahor. The two parties took positions against each other and exchanged heavy fire which continued for about an hour. The victim was identified as Sajjad Khan and the injured were shifted to Shahmansoor Hospital Complex.

Meanwhile, the JUI-F handed over cheques of Rs1.45 million to the 29 people who were injured in a suicide attack on the convoy of Maulana Fazlur Rehman near the Swabi interchange on March 30.

A function in this connection was held which was presided over by former provincial education minister Maulana Fazal Ali on Thursday. —Correspondent Kagh Lusht festival begins CHITRAL, April 14: The Kagh Lusht festival started here on Thursday in the plateau of Kagh Lusht in upper Chitral.

Apart from the local folk sports, the free-style polo match attracted a large number of fans on the first day of the festival.

Financially sponsored by the Tourism Corporation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the festival provided the locals with an opportunity of refreshing themselves after a harsh winter. The festival will continue for three days.

Meanwhile, Ghulam Hazrat Inqilabi defeated Khurshid Hussain by a narrow margin of two votes in the annual elections of the district bar association which held on Thursday.

The other office-bearers had already been elected unopposed including Sajidullah (vice-president), Mohammad Azeem Baig Chughtai (general secretary) and Altaf Gohar (finance secretary). —Correspondent Laid to rest

HARIPUR, April 14: Former tehsil nazim Haripur and PML-N's activist Iftikhar Ahmed Khan advocate was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard of Khalabat Township here on Thursday. He was assassinated by unknown assailants in Ajman Dubai on April 2.

The Dubai police after completion of initial investigation handed over the body to his heirs, which was flown to Khalabat Township on Wednesday night. He was buried amid tight security.

Former foreign minister Goher Ayub Khan, former state minister Omar Ayub Khan, Pir Sabir Shah, Abdul Subhan Khan, Dr Hassnain Raza Turabi, president High Court Bar Association Saeed Akhtar Khan advocate and lawyers, former nazims, teachers, political activists were among those who attended his funeral prayers. —Correspondent Selection panel constituted

PESHAWAR, April 14: The provincial government, in pursuance of the Article 77 of Police Order 2002, has constituted a selection panel to make recommendations for selection of independent members and invite applications for appointments, said a notification issued here on Thursday.

Badshah Gul Wazir, Provincial Ombudsman, will be its chairperson, while Gulzar Khan, Chairman, Provincial Public Service Commission, and Zubair Shah, a retired officer, will be members of the panel.

The selection panel will make recommendations for selection of three independent members (two male and one female) within 30 days.

The panel shall identify suitable candidates as well as invite applications and after scrutiny forward to the government the names of persons twice the number of appointments to be made. The panel will follow the provisions of Police Order 2002.—APP Oath of office PESHAWAR, April 14: The cabinet members of the International Relations Students Association (Irsa) took oath of office in a colorful ceremony held here on Thursday.

The ceremony was held at the Department of International Relations of the Peshawar University which was attended by students and faculty members. UoP VC Prof Dr Azmat Hayat was chief guest.

Prof Ijaz Khan, chairman of the IR Department, handed over the responsibility of Irsa to the new president Ijlal Ahmad Khattak. Dr Hayat administered oath to the newly elected cabinet members, according to a press release.

The students of the IR department previous performed skits and songs which were appreciated by the audience.

Certificates and cash awards were distributed among the winning team of IR department that won the 3rd Saarc Simulation Exercise held at Karachi. —Bureau Report Mock court trial PESHAWAR, April 14: Moot court mock trial competition was held at Law College, University of Peshawar, on Thursday in which students presented sample cases of various categories.

Students who defended and prosecuted cases were judged by a panel of judges. Students of LLB and LLM participated in the moot witnessed by scores of students and other participants from Frontier Law College and Law Department of Islamia College University, according to a press release.

The organiser of the competition Qaiser Shah who was one of the judges said the event was aimed at providing students with a simulation exercise so that they could get acquainted with the way to present cases in courts and get a know how of the circumstances they might come across in courts. —Bureau Report
