HYDERABAD, March 30: Six people fell victim to shots fired in the air in connection with the semi final played between the cricket teams of Pakistan and India in Mohali (India) on Wednesday.
Two women and two children were among the injured who suffered injuries by stray bullets in the city and Tando Allahyar in separate incidents. Some were in their houses when bullets hit them.They were taken to the Civil Hospital of Hyderabad where injured Ms Aamna, 15, of Pretabad was admitted the to surgical ward while Kashif was kept under observation.
Normal life remained suspended here like other parts of the country as people were watching the semi final. Even people in villages of Sindh were also invaded by cricket frenzy.
STUDENTS CLASH: Four activists of Sindh People's Students Federation (SPSF) suffered bullet injuries in Sindh University's International Hostel following a heated argument between two groups of students watching the Pakistan-India semi final on TV on Wednesday.
According to SPSF Sindh University president Razzaq Brohi, an activist of the JSSF objected to slogans raised in support of the Pakistani team when an Indian batsman was dismissed. This led to an exchange of hot words during which shots were fired and SPSF activists Rameez Sohag, Abdul Basit Brohi, Imran Borhi and Ishaq Brohi were injured.
They were taken to hospital where, according to medical superintendent Dr Ghulam Mustafa Abbasi, the condition of Rameez Sohag is serious.
The SHO of Jamshoro police station confirmed that slogans raised by SPSF activists had sparked the clash. He said no case had been registered till evening.
Meanwhile, curfew-like situation was witnessed in the city during the match and main roads wore a deserted look.
Initially some people opened their shops in main business establishments and commercial areas but in view of 'no-buyer' situation, they left for homes.
People of Jacobabad, especially youths, held a demonstration and burnt tyres against Sukkur Electric Supply Power Company (SEPCO) for suspending power supply for 16 hours due to which they could not watch the semi final.
A demonstration was held at Rohri Railway Station by passengers of different trains in protest against closure of television sets installed on every platform. They were angry because they could not watch the match.
