KARACHI, March 24: Officials of the Sindh Wildlife Department raided the shop of a hakim in Hyderabad and seized several stuffed specimens of protected animals and a live freshwater snake on Thursday. The hakim was arrested and a fine imposed on him.

The raiding party comprising Wajid Shaikh, Om Prakash and Wali Mohammad confiscated the stuffed specimens of two chinkara deer, one hog deer, one jungle cat and one fox, besides two turtle shells. Four hides of chinkara deer and one hide of hog deer were also seized.

Confirming the raid, the department's deputy conservator for Hyderabad, Dr Fahmida Firdous, said the Awami Dawakhana in Tower Market was raided and 'Hakim' Babar Haidery Awan arrested.

She said an FOR (which is equivalent to an FIR) was registered and a fine of Rs13,000 imposed on Awan.

The stuffed animals would be put on display at the museum and the live snake released into the wild, she added.
