VEHARI, Feb 5: Assailants on Saturday shot dead a man and injured two women after storming the house of a landlord at Fateh Shah (Burewala police precinct), about 50 kilometres from here, over a 'dispute'.

Reports said more than a dozen armed men entered landlord Jehangir's house and tried to abduct his wife, Shehrbano. On resistance they first roughed up the family and then opened fire, killing Atta Muhammad, cousin to Jehangir, and injuring two women.

The injured were admitted to the Fateh Shah Rural Health Centre.

The police said six months ago Jehangir abducted Shehrbano from Arotti Town of Toba Tek Singh and later the two opted for court marriage against the family wish. Dawn

Fateh Shah police SHO Jamil Hussain claimed that five of the assailants had bee taken into custody. Eyewitnesses said the police did not reach in time despite being timely informed, allowing most attackers to flee.A source told that the police arrested five of the attackers when their car broke down a kilometre away from the police station. People from various callings on Saturday observed the Kashmir Day with a pledge to continue moral and political support to their brethren till the settlement of the dispute.

A good number of people formed human chain which symbolised solidarity with the Kashmiri brethren. All markets, shopping centres, offices and institutions remained closed.

The Jamaat-i-Islami took out a big rally from Grain Market to TMA Chowk and its activists criticised the successive governments for ignoring the all-important issue.

Traders, students, journalists and lawyers also participated in walks and other related events.
