GUJRAT, Dec 11: Seven policemen were booked for shooting a car driver dead in Lalamusa (GT Road) allegedly after he refused to stop at various pickets as he was driving for an 'eloping' couple.
Reports said Alif Yaar of Kasur and Hafsa Bibi of Mohallah Mistarian, Jhelum, who were remotely related, eloped in a car (LOR 8383) from Jhelum. The parents of the girl, however, got an abduction case registered against Yaar and the police started chasing the car.
The Gujrat police were also informed of the car carrying the 'abductor' and the 'abducted' girl and a chase ensued.
Sarae Alamgir and Kharian police tried to intercept the car on GT Road but the driver sped away dodging the policemen manning the pickets.
When the car entered the precincts of Lalamusa, the police had already partially blocked the road by parking a truck. As the driver refused to stop the car, one of the policemen opened fire at it, killing driver Sajid Shah, of Chunian, whereas Alif Yaar was arrested.
The police, in a surprise move, registered a case against seven policemen on the report of the “abducted” woman. However, the family of the deceased driver protested against the lodging of the FIR on the report of the woman and demanded a case should be registered on their compliant. Dawn
The police have included the version of the family in the FIR. District Police Officer Afzaal Kausar told all the seven policemen who were present at the picket had been detained and a legal action would be taken against them in the light of a thorough investigation into the incident.
