Policeman dies on road

MARDAN, Dec 4: A police inspector was killed and eight others received multiple wounds when a passenger coach hit a roadside tree in the limits of Jabbar police station on Saturday.

Police said the ill-fated coach going from Katlang Adda to Mardan rammed into a roadside tree when its driver lost control over the vehicle while trying to overtake another vehicle on the Katlong road.

As a result police inspector Jamal Khan and eight other persons sustained injuries. They were taken to DHQ hospital, however, critically injured police inspector died before reaching the hospital.

The Jabbar police registered case on the complaint of one of the injured passengers Fayyaz Khan against the coach driver Rehmanullah. — Correspondent

Lawyer’s house looted

MANSEHRA, Dec 4: Four armed robbers took away a vehicle and valuables from the residence of a lawyer after locking the family in a room on Saturday.

The armed dacoits barged into the house of Malik Younus advocate and locked him and his wife in a room at Ghazikot Township and took with them a car and other valuables.

Police was deployed at entry and exit points to recover the vehicle and arrest the robbers.

Meanwhile, a notorious robber escaped from police custody on Saturday. Mohammad Rafique, who was arrested for many dacoities in Ghazikot town, was taken to local court. But, he managed to break free from police when he was leaving the court.

DCO Sohail Khail suspended four policemen and launched inquiry against them. —Correspondent

Protest for a cause

PESHAWAR, Dec 4: Members of Chitral Heritage Environment Protection Society (CHEPS) held a demonstration here on Saturday to highlight environmental issues in the backward district.

The demonstrators were holding placards inscribed with slogans for protection of the healthy atmosphere and warned that if appropriate steps were not taken the salubrious district would no longer sustain the increasing pollution.

A statement issued by the society stressed the need that government should focus on increasing literacy rate in the Chitral district as it could help create awareness among the people regarding protection of the environment.

It said that maintenance of peace was a must for sustainable clean environment as the members of civil society could play role in creating awareness about importance of forests, plantation of new saplings and protection of the clean water from pollution only in peaceful environment.—Bureau Report

Writers’ meeting

PESHAWAR, Dec 4: Sports Writers Association of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has scheduled a general body meeting at Qayyum Stadium on Dec 11.

A statement issued here on Saturday said the meeting besides finalising annual election programme would discuss various other issues.

All members of the association have been asked to make sure their presence in the meeting.

They have also been asked to clear their annual fee by depositing Rs500 with the association members Asif Shehzad, Adnan Tariq and Shakeel ur Rehman.—Bureau Report
