Three shot dead in Khyber

LANDI KOTAL, Nov 29: Three persons were killed and two others received critical injuries when a mentally retarded man opened fire with a rifle he snatched from a Khasadar here on Monday.

The killer identified as Karnail Khan was also later shot dead by his relatives. Sources said the incident occurred at Ali Masjid bazaar when the mentally retarded person snatched a rifle from a khasadar, Khiyal Wali, and opened indiscriminate firing.The firing resulted in the killing of the killer's own brother Nawaz Khan and two passers-by Iran Khan and Nazir.

The Khasadar personnel Khiyal Wali and another passer-by Khanzada received fatal injuries and were taken to hospital in critical condition. Later, the relatives of the mentally retarded man also shot him dead.—Correspondent

Two killed in Kohat

KOHAT, Nov 29: Two boys were killed and one injured in different incidents here on Monday. In Nasrat Khel village, a shaft of a boring machine in the house of Malik Tariq broke and hit Hayat Khan killing him instantly.

In another accident two motorcycles hit Suzuki vans due to speeding on Rawalpindi road near Bilitang, which resulted into death of Yousaf Khan, resident of KDA Township and injuries to Zeeshan, police said. The police arrested vans’ drivers Abdur Rehman and Shehzad.—Correspondent

Woman commits suicide

HARIPUR, Nov 29: A married woman committed suicide by hanging from ceiling fan in the jurisdiction of Kotnajibullah police station here on Monday. The reason behind the incident was not yet known.

The police quoted Mohammad Suleman of Dingi village as saying his daughter Khatoon Bibi, 22, was married to Maqbool Khan, a military personal, a few years back in the same village. On Sunday night, her father said, she went to her bedroom but did not turn up for breakfast and when he along with other family members entered her room he found her hanging from the ceiling fan. She was removed to DHQ hospital but the doctors pronounced her dead.—Correspondent

Profiteers sent to prison

KOHAT, Nov 29: A number of bakers and confectioners were sent to the district prison after collection of fine for less weight and unhygienic conditions in their shops, sources said on Monday.

The Assistant Coordination Officer, Kohat, Naeem Sadozai conducted sudden raids at various tandoors and bakeries after receiving public complaints of fleecing. He was accompanied by food inspector Amanullah Khan and SHO of city police station, Shaukat Khan. He also warned several shopkeepers to prominently display rate lists otherwise they will also be sent to prison.

The ACO sent owners of Bukhari sweet house, Asli Punjabi sweet house, Ismail sweet house and tandoor operators, Sabir in old bus stand and Spin Ghar hotel and restaurant to prison after collecting fine of Rs2,000 from each of them.—Correspondent

Unicef donates bed nets

PESHAWAR, Nov 29: Unicef has donated over 190,000 long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to be provided to the flood affected people.

These items were handed over by the Unicef Peshawar chief Lucio Milandri to provincial Minister for Health Syed Zahir Ali Shah at a ceremony here on Monday.

Speaking on this occasion, the minister asked the health functionaries to tackle every challenge with honesty and vision, adding, they should strive for preventing health problems.

He said the health department should create awareness among the people and help prevent malaria and other health problems. He thanked the Unicef for extending help to the flood affected people.—Bureau Report

Growers, traders hold demo

PESHAWAR, Nov 29: Farmers and businessmen held a demonstration here on Monday against the ban on export of gur from Peshawar and demanded of the government to relax the policy as it had badly affected their business.

Holding banners inscribed with their demands the protesters also shouted slogans against the government for what they described snatching bread from the mouth of the poor.

Talking to reporters the people said supply of gur to the tribal areas should not be taken as a new trade policy as the businessmen used to send gur there as routine.

Demonstrators warned of agitation if the government did not lift the ban. — Bureau Report

Mass wedding

PARACHINAR, Nov 29: A mass wedding of 68 couples was held in Parachinar on Monday. Two local charity organisations – Tehreek-i-Hussaini and Majlis Ulema-i-Ahlebait -- had arranged the mass wedding. Large number of people attended the ceremony and couples received dowries. —Correspondent

Prolonged power outages

KARAK, Nov 29: DCO Karak Javed Ahmad Khan has directed the local Pesco officials to end prolonged loadshedding and solve low voltage problem, which have caused worst shortage of drinking water.

At a meeting with Pesco manager Bannu circle Mohammad Ayaz Khan here on Monday, the DCO said the loadshedding and low voltage had rendered a number of water supply schemes non-functional. The meeting was also attended by deputy manager Pesco Karak Sadiq Khan and elders from various areas.

He directed the Pesco officials to chalk out a schedule for loadshedding and improve the voltage. He also showed concern over people’s complaints about excessive billing and undue fines. — Correspondent

Football tourney concludes

ISLAMABAD, Nov 29: Peshawar won the final of ‘Right to Play’ women football league, defeating Mardan 2-0 here on Monday. The final match was played in Peshawar between Peshawar city and Mardan teams, enjoyed by a capacity crowd. Teams from different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata participated in the three-day event. A total of 17 matches were played between girls of 10 different teams. Chief guest Minister of Sports Syed Aqil Shah presented the trophy to the captain of the winning team.—Our Reporter

SWABI, Nov 29: A two-day ‘Electrical Engineering Conference’ was concluded on Monday in Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology.

The conference was organised by Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), GIK Institute chapter.
