KARACHI, Nov 19: Two brothers were gunned in front of their homes in Old Golimar on Thursday, police said. They said some gunmen came to the home of 60-year-old Abdul Rasheed in Noor Muhammad Village, looking for his son Navaid.

“Navaid is associated with a gang in Lyari and has been on the run for the past few weeks,” said an official at the Pak Colony police station. “The family members said the gunmen after failing to find Navaid at home brought Abdul Rasheed and his 40-year-old younger brother Abdul Aziz alias Ustaad outside the house.”

The two sides exchanged hot words before the family heard several gunshots, said the official, adding that they rushed out only to find the brothers lying in a pool of blood.

The bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi, but the family disallowed carrying out of medico-legal formalities of the bodies. The police said the double murder was the result of a rivalry between two criminal gangs in Lyari.

“Navaid is wanted in a few cases. He has been long associated with one of the gangs,” said an official at the Pak Colony police station. “The murder of his father and uncle was in fact an attempt to take revenge by members of a rival gang, who are enjoying power these days due to their political clout in the area.”

He said the police could not register an FIR of the killings as the families of the victims refused to cooperate with the investigators.

“We are trying to persuade the families but they are in a state of shock and also busy with the burial of the bodies. If they do not respond positively, we will definitely move on our own to register an FIR,” added the police official.

Two men kill wives Two young women were killed allegedly by their husbands in separate attacks in different areas during the Eid holidays. In both incidents, the police of the respective areas arrested the suspects.

In the first incident, 30-year-old Saima was found slaughtered in her third-floor apartment of Gul Phase Building near Hasht Chowk of Lyari. The police said the incident occurred on the first day of Eid and came to police notice only after the alleged killer appeared before them to surrender.

“The victim's husband, Qadir Khan, said he had had a dispute with his wife for the past few weeks that intensified on Tuesday night,” said Inspector Yousuf Baloch, the SHO of the Kalri police station. “The couple exchanged hot words and ultimately the suspect overpowered his wife and slit her throat.”

Early in the morning, he said, the suspect emerged in the police station with the knife he had used in the crime and narrated the story.

The couple got married some six years ago and have two children.

In the other incident, 42-year-old Tasleema was allegedly strangled by her husband in Punjabi Colony near Liaquatabad. The official said Tasleema was found dead inside her home when some neighbours went to see her on the Eid day.

“The neighbours later approached the police, who tried to contact the victim's husband, Abdul Majeed, but his cellphone was found switched off,” said an official at the Sharifabad police station. “This raised suspicions about the role of the husband and finally the police traced him at one of his relatives' place.”

He confessed to the murder, citing some domestic dispute, said the official, adding that the police had also detained a relative of the suspect for questioning.

“The couple had no child and had been living in the area for the past several years. The victim's family is due to arrive here from Punjab in a day or two. Their presence may also help trace the exact reason behind the murder,” added the official.
