Daily doses of frustration

From the Newspaper | National | By Malik Tahseen Raza
12th October, 2010

MUZAFFARGARH, Aug 22: Frustration is creeping in among the flood-stricken people who are in need of food and other basic necessities of life.

On Sunday, hundreds of women rushed to the Katchery Office (DCO Office) for getting dry ration when rumour spread that ration was available there. However, they were anguished to find that there was no such provision and that their three-hour wait was futile.

Shazia Nasreen, a resident of Chowk Godar, told this correspondent that she had three daughters for whom she had failed to get dry ration from the district government in the last two days. She said some donors gave her some food and now she came to the DCO Office when she learnt about the food availability but found nothing.

This correspondent saw some people registering the names of the people. In the afternoon hundreds of people gathered outside the DCO Office and threatened to attack revenue officials. They accused the revenue officials of appropriating relief goods.

Meanwhile, the district administration shut its offices to prevent any reaction by the angry people. Later, PPP MNA Jamshed Dasti reached there and made the mob disperse on the assurance that the government was making efforts to provide relief to the people.

District Coordination Officer Farasat Iqbal told the people who visited his office that they were supplying food to the registered camps. He said new camps were being registered. The DCO pledged strict action against those found involved in appropriation of relief goods.

The distressed people appealed to the higher-ups to provide relief to them on the basis of their needs and in a transparent manner.
