SHEIKHUPURA, Feb 15: At least seven people were killed when four robbers reportedly opened fire in a failed bid to loot a goldsmith on Gujranwala Road on Sunday.

Reports said goldsmith Nadeem Butt, carrying about 6 kilogram gold, was returning to Gujranwala along with his driver and two gunmen from Faislabad through Motorway by a car (LEC 9000).

As the car reached near Dheer Da Moor, some six kilometer from Gujranwala, the robbers, apparently chasing the vehicle, opened fire on it, killing the two gunmen, Amjad, Ashgar and the driver, Amjad Ali, instantly, and critically injuring Nadeem.

A volley of bullets fired by the reckless robbers also hit the driver of a stationary passenger van (coaster), Yaqoob and three passersby Anyat, Rafi Ullah and an unidentified man. All of them died on the spot.

Three unidentified passersby also sustained critical bullet injuries and were admitted to the local hospital.

The robbers fled the scene without any booty.

According to eyewitnesses, Sadar police, reaching the crime scene after about an hour of the incident, took the car along with the gold into the custody.

On knowing about the incident, the locals including shopkeepers gathered on the road and took out a rally to protest against the deteriorating law and order situation in the district.

The protesters kept Sheikhupura-Gujranwala road blocked near Dheer Da Moor for about two hours. They chanted slogans against police.

The incident happened about just 500 yards away from a checkpoint manned by patrolling police.

The police have registered a case against unidentified robbers.
