ANP accused of rigging in Buner polls
By Our Staff Correspondent
HYDERABAD, Feb 15: Jamaat-i-Islami activists staged a demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday in protest against alleged rigging in Buner by-elections.
Sindh JI chief Asadullah Bhutto, said that rigging had strengthened the system of bullet against that of ballots and added that JI leader Bakht Jahan’s defeat was an insult to people’s mandate. He alleged that the Awami National Party talked about democracy but grabbed power through undemocratic means.
He said that Senator Khurshid Ahmed has provided evidence of rigging to Election Commission and now it was up to it to honour people’s mandate by declaring JI’s candidate successful.
Local JI leader Abdul Waheed Qureshi said that those who were involved in election malpractices have held NWFP hostage and accused ANP of plunging NWFP in strife.
Mushtaq Ahmed Khan and Dr Saifur Rehman also spoke on the occasion.
Our Mirpurkhas correspondent adds: JI workers held a similar protest demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday.
Dozens of JI workers led by Naib Ameer Azizur Rehman, carried banners and raised slogans against the government.
Speaking on the occasion, local JI leader Azizur Rehman said that a large number of people cast votes in favour of the JI candidate in the by-election hence he had lead in all the polling stations. However, a bomb exploded in a polling station as a result announcement of its results was stopped.
He added that the chief election commissioner has announced the candidate of Awami National Party as winner.
He alleged that the bomb explosion was made to pre-empt the success of the JI candidate.
