Multi-pronged plan against terror backed

ISLAMABAD, July 4: President Pervez Musharraf has reiterated the country’s firm resolve to combat terrorism and extremism.

Talking to a three-member US Congressional delegation led by Congressman Gene Green here on Friday, the president stressed the importance of a comprehensive, multi-pronged counter-terrorism strategy.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, the discussions covered bilateral relations, including matters relating to economic and counter-terrorism cooperation.

The Congressional leaders expressed support for a strong and broader relationship with Pakistan. They praised Pakistan’s commitment to the war against terrorism and extremism and reaffirmed support for Pakistan’s social development goals.

The delegation which includes Republican Congressman Mike McCaul and Democrat Henry Cuellar also called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani who said frequent visits by Congressional delegations to the country reflected US support for the new government.

He said Pakistan wanted to deepen and enhance its strategic relationship with the US in all fields, especially in trade, investment and energy sectors.

Members of the US delegation said induction of a democratic government in Pakistan would strengthen the partnership between the two countries. They said the Congress would extend full support to the democratic government in all fields.
