Five policemen killed in militant attacks Saturday, 22 Nov, BANNU/KOHAT: Five policemen were killed and five others were wounded in the southern districts of the Frontier province when militants attacked a check post and a police mobile on Friday night, officials said. Suspected militants attacked the Lowara Pull police post with heavy weapons. Police countered the attack and exchanged fire with the assailants. ATC formally indicts Benazir murder suspects Saturday, 22 Nov, RAWALPINDI: Five accused arrested for their alleged role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto pleaded not guilty here on Saturday when an anti-terrorism court formally indicted them for assassinating and abetting the murder of PPP chairperson. ATC-I Special Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rehman, who had been conducting the trial in Adiala jail, formally indicted the accused Aitzaz Shah, Sher Zaman, Abdul Rasheed, Rafaqat Hussain and Hasnain Gul for killing, hatching criminal conspiracy to kill, abetting the perpetrators, using illegal explosive material and spreading terrorism on December 27 last year when 22 people, including the former PM, were killed and 65 others were injured in a gun and bomb attack in Liaqat Bagh. Bangladesh crash to innings defeat Saturday, 22 Nov, BLOEMFONTEIN: Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful admitted his side failed to cope with South Africa's fast bowlers after they crashed to an innings and 129 runs defeat on the fourth day of the first Test at Springbok Park here Saturday. Bangladesh were bowled out for 159 in their follow-on innings after being dismissed for 153 in the first innings. ‘The wicket was good but it had a bit of bounce and the batsmen couldn't apply themselves,’ said Ashraful. Sorenstam's glorious career comes to a close Saturday, 22 Nov, WEST PALM BEACH, Florida: Swedish superstar Annika Sorenstam missed the cut in her final event, ending a 15-year glorious career on the American ladies golf tour. Indian troops, Kashmir protesters clash kills two Saturday, 22 Nov, SRINAGAR: Indian troops fired at hundreds of stone-throwing Muslims protesting against elections in Kashmir on Saturday, killing two people including a teenage boy and wounding 20, Reuters quoted police and witnesses as saying. US-led troops kill 14 militants in Afghanistan Saturday, 22 Nov, KABUL: The US-led military said Saturday its forces had killed 14 insurgents in military operations in southern Afghanistan, also shooting and killing a civilian who came too close to a patrol. The deadliest battle was in the southern province of Helmand where Afghan and coalition security forces killed 10 militants on Thursday after coming under attack during a patrol, it said in a statement. Early Friday, troops on an operation targeting a Taliban commander in the southwestern province of Farah came under attack in a village and returned fire, killing four militants, another statement said, adding that various weapons were recovered. Two top Al Qaeda militants killed by US missile Saturday, 22 Nov, ISLAMABAD: The alleged mastermind of a 2006 transatlantic airplane bombing plot was killed in a US missile attack in northwest Pakistan early on Saturday, officials said. 'The transatlantic bombing plot alleged mastermind Rahsid Rauf was killed along with an Egyptian Al-Qaeda operative in the US missile strike in North Waziristan early Saturday,' a senior security official told AFP. Iran hangs man accused of spying for Israel Saturday, 22 Nov, TEHRAN: Iran has hanged an Iranian man convicted in June of spying for Israel, the ISNA news agency reported on Saturday, amid spiralling tensions between the Islamic Republic and the Jewish state. The counter-espionage director of the intelligence ministry said, ‘Ali Ashtari, who had been sentenced to death for cooperation with the Zionist regime spying services, was hanged,’ ISNA said. Shahbaz Sharif urges end to missile strikes Saturday, 22 Nov, HONG KONG: The chief minister of Pakistan's most populous province called Saturday for Washington to stop aerial missile strikes on the nation's soil, as the latest raid killed four more suspected militants, AFP reported. Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab and the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, said the strikes targeting Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants were only stoking tensions with Washington's 'war on terror' ally. Eight people killed in north China hotel fire Saturday, 22 Nov, BEIJING: At least eight people were killed and another 16 injured when a blaze erupted in a hotel in northern China Saturday, state press reported. The fire spread through the seven-storey Jintian hotel in Luliang city, Shanxi province early Saturday morning, Xinhua news agency reported. Seven people were confirmed dead at the scene after the fire was put out, the report said, while another person died at a local hospital. Sixteen others were hospitalised with injuries, it added. Eight Thai protesters injured in new attack Saturday, 22 Nov, BANGKOK: Eight Thai anti-government protesters were wounded, one critically, in a pre-dawn grenade attack in Bangkok Saturday, ramping up tensions a day ahead of a major rally, officials said. The explosion came two days after one person was killed and 29 were wounded in a similar attack on demonstrators who have occupied the prime minister's offices in the capital since August. The latest blast hit a checkpoint manned by guards from the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) outside the Government House compound they are occupying, an emergency services spokeswoman said. ‘All of the victims are men, one was hurt by shrapnel in his head and neck,’ she said. Former Qaeda No 2 mentor in bitter war of words Saturday, 22 Nov, CAIRO: Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri is a plagiarist who worked for Sudanese intelligence before his handlers grew tired of his jokes, his former spiritual mentor has claimed in a newspaper article. The accusations are the latest in an increasingly bitter war of words between Zawahiri and Sayed Imam, the former spiritual guide of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad movement to which Osama bin Laden's deputy once belonged. Imam was highly regarded for his erudition by militants. The feud began in 2007, after Imam penned a book from his Egyptian prison cell denouncing Al-Qaeda for killing innocent people and being responsible for the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Suspected US missile kills four in Waziristan Saturday, 22 Nov, ISLAMABAD: A missile strike by a suspected US drone killed at least four militants early Saturday in the North Waziristan tribal district along the largely ungoverned Pak-Afghan border, Reuters reported. 'According to our information two missiles were fired by the drone on a house... Four people were killed,' an intelligence officer in the region said. Another officer said three missiles were fired. The attack on a house near the town of Mir Ali came just two days after Pakistan lodged a protest with the US ambassador over missile attacks on its territory. Yesterday, Taliban militants based in the rugged tribal territory bordering Afghanistan warned of reprisal attacks across Pakistan if there were more suspected strikes by the US. Fishermen rally demand rights from the government Saturday, 22 Nov, HYDERABAD: Fishermen brought out a big rally in the city here Friday to mark World Fishermen Day and demanded of the government to protect their rights that are being denied to them. They demanded that LBOD and RBOD projects should be shelved and contract and license systems should be abolished. The rally began from old campus roundabout and culminated outside local press club. Jammat-I-Islami leader’s house raided by police Saturday, 22 Nov, LAHORE: Islamabad Police on Friday raided Mansoora’s residence of Jammat-I-Islami leader Munawar Hasan as he was wanted under 16 MPO. However, the police could not arrest him as he was not present there. They however handed over the copy of the FIR against him to his family. Higher sugar standards not welcomed by industry Saturday, 22 Nov, LAHORE: Chairman, Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, Punjab Zone, Mr. Javed Kayani has strongly reacted to Government’s Notification SRO No.(I)/2008, dated 11 October 2008 vide which sugar mills have been prohibited to manufacture, keep in stock or sale of refined and white sugar w.e.f 1st January, 2009 which does not conform to the relevant Pakistan Standard PSS:1822-2007. Chairman PSMA Punjab Zone has said that in the first place Pakistan Standards PSS:1822-2007 are only applicable to pharma grade sugar which is only being produced in UK or some other developed country.
