KARACHI, Sept 26: An additional district and sessions court, south, granted bail to a suspect against a surety of Rs100,000 in a bank robbery case on Friday.

The suspect, Gul Hussain, who was deployed on guard duty at the bank, had moved a bail application in court through his counsel.

Judge Irfan Hussain Siddiqui pronounced the order after recording arguments from both sides on the application.

Two security guards, Gul Hussain and Chindar Wali, along with Noor Zali, the father of another guard, Shah Mohammad, were arrested on Aug 21. Shah Mohammad is believed to be a prime suspect in the case.

According to the prosecution, Shah Mohammad along with his associates had looted cash, savings certificates and valuables worth millions of rupees by breaking into the lockers of the Mansfield Street branch of Habib Bank Limited in the Preedy police limits by using gas-powered welding equipment in the small hours of Aug 15.

Before fleeing he left a letter at the crime scene giving an eyewitness account of the crime.

A case (FIR No 574/08) was registered at the Preedy police station. Shah Mohammad is still at large.

Remanded

A civil judge and judicial magistrate, west, remanded a suspect in police custody till Sept 29 for his alleged involvement in a burglary.

Police said the suspect, Mohammad Arshad, along with his associates barged into the house of the complainant, Ashfaq Ahmed, on Sept 11 in the Pakistan Bazaar police limits. The intruders deprived Mr Ahmed of cash and other valuables.

The police arrested Arshad on Sept 25 while his two accomplices escaped. A case was registered against the suspects under Sections 392 and 454/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Pakistan Bazaar police station.

Property details submitted

The deputy district officer (revenue) of Gadap Town submitted a report under Section 88 of the Criminal Procedure Code (attachment of property of the person absconding) in an anti-terrorism court.

Judge Abdul Ghafoor Memon of ATC-II, who had issued arrest warrants of the DDO on the pervious hearing for not submitting the property details of the two absconding accused in a kidnapping for ransom case, adjourned the proceedings till Saturday.

The prosecution said the suspects, Rashid Bolach alias Ustad and Saleem alias TT, along with their absconding associates had allegedly kidnapped Ghulam Abbas in the Liaquatabad area on June 20. The kidnappers demanded Rs1.5 million and released the captive after collecting the ransom.

A case (FIR 97/2008) was registered under Section 365-A of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-terrorism Act at Sharifabad police station.

The police arrested Rashid and Saleem in Shah Latif Town. However, their associates, Bhutto Bangali and Shahid, are still at large.

Plea about missing person

A two-member bench of the Sindh High Court again on Thursday directed the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI) to submit their comments till October 15 regarding a petition seeking the whereabouts of a missing person.

Earlier, the bench had issued notices to the respondents — the Sindh home secretary and inspector-general, DG Sindh Rangers, officials of the ISI, MI and the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC), and the SHO of the Nazimabad police station — directing them to submit their comments.

All the respondents except the ISI and MI have submitted their comments and maintained that they had neither arrested nor confined the missing man.

Petitioner Zubair Khan has submitted a petition through Advocate Maqbool-ur-Rahman stating that his friend, Waheed Ahmed, had been picked up from outside a mosque in Nazimabad on March 25. He said three persons, apparently members of some law-enforcement agency, whisked him away in a white car as he came out of the mosque after offering prayers.

The petitioner submitted that whereabouts of the victim, a student of the Jamia Abu Bakr, could not be known since then.

The advocate general, on behalf of the intelligence agencies, sought some time but the bench, comprising Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani, directed that their comments must be submitted on the next date of hearing.
