KARACHI, Sept 26: While expressing satisfaction over the vice chancellor’s decision to debar a student accused of thrashing three university teachers on Aug 26, Karachi University Teachers’ Society has warned the administration that its persistent failure to improve the law and order situation on the campus could force teachers to abandon their services.

The vice chancellor took the decision on the recommendation of the university’s discipline committee.

Kuts, in a statement issued here, has appreciated the vice chancellor’s move, but, at the same time maintained that the administration needs to take more tough measures to prevent recurrence of such violent incidents.

“The teachers are concerned over the increasing incidents of violence and hooliganism on the campus and warned the university administration that if effective security measures were not taken, teachers would not be able to continue their work,” the statement said.

Referring to the many meetings held to sort out the campus security issues, Kuts has urged the vice chancellor to immediately order implementation of the proposals that had been discussed and agreed upon.

It has also called for unity among teachers, while urging students and their parents to demonstrate responsible behaviour and stay away from ‘violent and criminal activities’.

Kuts’ statement has come against the backdrop of a notification issued by the university on Friday. According to the notification, a student of International Relations Department, Mohammad Qasim, has been ‘debarred’ till the final decision of the discipline committee against which he had failed to appear despite many reminders.

The student was also found responsible for misleading the university authorities by providing a false residential address.

Due to the above reasons, the notification says: “Mr Qasim shall remain deprived of all benefits and privileges of a bona fide student of Karachi University except to the extent provided otherwise in the debarment order.”

It may be mentioned here that three students were also killed in campus violence on the same day, August 26.
