KARACHI, Sept 26: Transfer and posting of a large number of teachers from one college to another has been started with the commencement of the new academic year.

As many as 27 teachers were transferred on Friday and, according to sources, another 50 are to be transferred in a couple of days.

Out of the 27 teachers whose have been transferred on Friday, 10 were posted until now at the PECHS Girls College, nine at the Govt Nazimabad College, seven at the DJ Govt Science College and one at the Adamjee Govt College.

The sources pointed out that transfer and posting on such a big scale at a time when the new academic session had just commenced was bound to create administrative problems for the managements of the colleges concerned. The staff at the colleges where the process of admission to the Class-XI is still under way are particularly disturbed by the move, according to the sources. Resentment prevailed among the teaching staff at some of these colleges when the transfer letters were handed over to the teachers concerned, they said.

The sources also pointed out that since the Sindhi language teacher of DJ Science College and Mathematics teacher of Ship-owners Govt College had been appointed only recently as principals of a newly-established colleges — the Govt Jamshed Road Girls College and the Manghopir College —, the colleges of their previous posting were now left with no teacher for the subjects. Similarly, one of the two Zoology teachers posted at the Adamjee Govt College has been transferred to some other college and the college administration was in a fix over how to teach a large number of students of Class XI and XII students with only one teacher at its disposal.

Commenting on the move, Prof Iftikhar Azmi of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) said that transfer of teachers on such a big scale amid a shortage of no fewer than 2,000 teachers across the province was bound to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in educational institutions.

“Had the education secretary and director-general (colleges), Sindh, been sincere about offsetting the shortage, they would have posted the 650 teachers already recommended by the Sindh Public Service Commission and given appointment letters five months back,” he argued, adding that the recent government moves were only aggravating the problem at the colleges which were already facing a dearth of teachers.

Prof Azmi accused the officials of taking certain steps to ruin the atmosphere of the colleges. In this regard, he also mentioned the recent move to hand over control of two colleges to an NGO.

Admission process

A number of students who have been offered admission to the Govt Boys College, Gulshan-i-Bihar, Govt Boys College, Qasba and Govt Boys College, Sector 11, Orangi Town under the Centralized Admission Policy (CAP) have been facing immense hardship in completing the admission formalities owing to the non-availability of the staff concerned.

The Sindh education department has established five colleges in the city which were inaugurated by provincial Minister for Education Pir Mazharul Haq recently. But the department has, so far, failed to appoint teachers and other staff in the required number. The staff available at the Govt Azam Basti Boys College and Govt Jamshed Girls College has been provided on a “detailment” basis in violation of a ban announced by the provincial government.

It has also been learnt that although the five newly colleges have Commerce and Arts faculties, they offered admission to first year classes only in the Commerce faculty.
