KARACHI, Sept 22: The administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts in Karachi, Khawaja Naveed Ahmed, on Monday remanded a suspect in police custody till Sept 29 for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of his cousin.
The suspect, Jahanzeb, was arrested by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell on Sunday a day after his cousin, Nawaz Ali, was found dead in his car in Clifton.
The prosecution said Nawaz Ali was kidnapped from the Boat Basin area on Sept 19. The kidnapper demanded Rs10 million for his release. However, instead of releasing the captive, the kidnapper poisoned him.
During the initial interrogation, the suspect told the investigators that he had called his cousin at Clifton beach and gave him a heavy dose of tranquillizers in juice. About the motive, he said that he killed Nawaz because he was fond of the suspect’s sister and used to send messages to her cellphone, which had annoyed Jahanzeb.
A case (FIR 392/08) was registered under Sections 365-A and 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Boat Basin police limits on the complaint of the deceased’s father, Iftikhar.
Judicial remand
A judicial magistrate, west, remanded a woman and her three relatives to jail in judicial custody till Sept 28 on charges of killing her husband.
The judge also directed the investigation officer to submit the charge-sheet on the next hearing.
The prosecution said that Mohammed Jameel was allegedly killed by his wife, Shabana, with the help of her three relatives and the suspects buried the body besides his house in Surjani Town. She informed her father-in-law that his son was missing.
However, after a search was mounted for the deceased a case was lodged against Shabana and her relatives on the complaint of his father, Ghulam Shabbir.
Police arrested the suspects, Shabana, Rashid, Shabbir and Nisar Khan alias Nasir Khan, on Sept 13. During interrogation, they disclosed that the body was buried besides the victim’s house. The body was exhumed on Sept 17, the prosecution said.
Surjani Town police registered a case (FIR No 431/2008) under Section 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Bail plea rejected
An additional district and sessions court, west, rejected the bail application of a female accused in a couple’s murder case.
The judge pronounced the verdict after recording arguments from both sides.
One of the suspects, Rashida, through her counsel had earlier moved a bail application in court although her husband, Asadullah, according to the prosecution, had confessed to having killed Kashif Ali Khan, a bank manager, and the victim’s wife, Mehwish, with the help of his wife.
Kashif Ali Khan, a bank manager, and his wife, Mehwish, were found shot dead in their Taisar Town residence on Nov 21, 2007, the prosecution said, adding that Surjani Town police arrested the accused after an initial investigation.
Surjani Town police registered a case (FIR No 384/2007) of the couple’s murder under Section 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the behalf of the state when the relatives of the deceased refused to lodge a case.
