KARACHI, Sept 15: The president of Pakistan, in exercise of powers conferred upon him under the constitution, has allowed extension in the tenure of service of five additional judges of the Sindh High Court.These are Justice Syed Mehmood Alam Rizvi, Justice Abdul Rahman Faruq Pirzada, Justice Abdul Rasheed Kalwar, Justice Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani and Justice Salman Ansari.—APP

Justice Abdul Rahman Faruq Pirzada, a former additional advocate-general; former district and sessions judges Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani, Salman Ansari and Abdul Rasheed Kalwar; and Syed Mehmood Alam Rizvi, a former federal government standing counsel, were appointed additional judges of the SHC on Sept 17, 2007, for a period of one year, adds our staff reporter.

Justices Pirzada and Rizvi took the oath under the provisional constitution order of Nov 3, 2007, and served for the entire one-year tenure. Justices Sherwani, Ansari and Kalwar, who were relieved following the imposition of emergency, were reinstated recently with their seniority intact. All five would now continue to serve as additional judges till March 2009.

Another batch of additional judges consisting of Justice Rana Mohammad Shamim, Justice Khwaja Naveed Ahmed and Justice Khalid Ali Z. Qazi is up for confirmation or extension on Nov 3. Six additional judges appointed on Dec 14, 2007, would be completing their tenure on Dec 13. They are: Justices Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan, Justice Syed Pir Ali Shah, Justice Bin Yamin, Justice Arshad Noor Khan, Justice Ghulam Dastagir Shahani and Justice Farrukh Zia Shaikh.
