Balochistan business welcomes change

By Saleem Shahid

QUETTA, Aug 18: The business community of Balochistan on Monday welcomed the resignation of President Musharraf, and expressed the hope that the political government would take measures to improve the ailing national economy.

They suggested that technocrats be inducted in the government for speedy recovery of economy and industrialisation.

They said that the law and order situation was the main cause that had been discouraging local and foreign investment.

Former President of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry Fazalur Rehman Dittu said that President Musharraf should have resigned earlier, but it was not too late.

He said he was seeing its good impact on economy and hoped that the situation would normalise soon.

He, however, said that it all depends on policies of the coalition government.

“It should adopt business-friendly policies for early recovery of deteriorating economy of the country,” Mr Dittu told Dawn.

He criticised the economic policies of the Musharraf-led government and termed it anti-businessman.

“Musharraf and his government handed businessmen to NAB,” he said, adding it affected local investment.

The former FPCCI president suggested that the political government should set up a commission for revival of industry that was badly discouraged by the pervious government.

He said that with industrialisation job opportunities would be created that would help resolve unemployment problem.

Sardar Mohammad Ali Jogezai, former vice president of the FPCCI, was optimistic about revival of economy, saying that soon after Musharraf’s resignation, Pakistani rupee had gained and improvement was seen in the stock exchange points.

He, however, said that the coalition government should immediately change policies of the pervious rulers, and give realistic policies to the nation for speedy development in industry and other fields.

He was also critical about the law and order situation and said that the government should give full attention to it.

Khalifa Tahir, former President of Balochistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that Musharraf did not implement those policies which he had announced when he captured power.

He said that after Musharraf he was not seeing immediate changes in the economy as people sitting people in the political government have no ability to tackle the situation.

He, however, suggested that for bringing a change in the situation, a national government should be formed and in it technocrats be inducted.

“Technocrats can resolve the economic issues faced by the country,” Mr Tahir said.
