Musharraf must be tried: Qazi

Published August 13, 2008

LAHORE, Aug 12: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) amir Qazi Hussain Ahmed has demanded that the government reinstate the deposed judges and try President Pervez Musharraf instead of giving him a safe passage.

Talking to reporters at the Lahore airport on his return from Sudan on Tuesday, the JI chief said Musharraf’s removal was imminent because the ruling coalition had the support of the required number of legislators in the parliament. He said the reinstatement of the deposed judges would ensure success of the impeachment move and accountability of Musharraf.

Ahmed said Musharraf abrogated the constitution twice, ‘massacred’ Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa students, launched operations in Fata and Balochistan, assassinated Nawab Akbar Bugti, handed Pakistanis to the US for money and made the armed forces fight their ‘own people’, adding that he should be tried for these crimes in an open court.
