Zakauddin rues missed chances in defeat

BEIJING, Aug 11: Pakistan hockey chief coach Khawaja Zakauddin on Monday described missed chances as the main cause of his side’s 2-4 defeat against Great Britain.

“We played superbly in the second session but our forwards missed several opportunities,” he told reporters at a press conference with captain Zeeshan Ashraf after the match.

“Britons played well in the first half. We looked good in the second session and we could have at least drawn the game if we had not missed a couple of sitters,” he remarked.

“One cannot win if he misses so many chances and then does not convert short corners. That makes things very difficult,” he pointed out.

Zaka complimented Britain goalie Alistair McGregor for his superb saves.

He, however, said his players were capable of bouncing back in the tournament.

Captain Zeeshan Ashraf said he was very disappointed with the result.

“We were looking for a win in the opener but luck was not on our side. A couple of conversion on penalty-corners could have made the difference,” he observed.—APP
