‘Govt seeks access to Aafia’

By Iftikhar A. Khan

ISLAMABAD, Aug 5: The government is committed to bringing back all Pakistanis detained abroad, including Dr Aafia Siddiqui, says the Foreign Office.

A statement issued here on Tuesday said the foreign affairs ministry had approached the US authorities to ascertain the veracity of recent reports about Ms Siddiqui who had been missing for several years.

The government had also sought to get an access to her, said the statement.

“We have been informed that Dr Aafia Siddiqui was taken in US custody from Afghan authorities on July 17, 2008, in Ghazni, Afghanistan, and has been transferred to the US,” said the statement. It did not mention the charges faced by Ms Siddiqui but said efforts to bring her back would continue.
