Pakistan will not go soft on terror: Ambassador Haqqani
WASHINGTON, June 27 (APP) The Pakistani people have spoken categorically against terrorism and the country will not go soft on its resolve to fight the menace during the transition period, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani said. “Let me assure you that millions of people turned out on February 18 to vote against terrorism- we lost Benazir Bhutto, our icon of democracy- this campaign was as much for democracy as was for fighting terrorists. Therefore, nobody should think that Pakistan is going to go soft on terrorism just because it has a transitional government that is still trying to find its way,” the ambassador stated at a reception he hosted at the Pakistani embassy. Haqqani was confident that the US-Pakistan relationship would graduate into a strategic partnership, which will be long-term and wide-ranging. “Pakistan and the United States will remain allies and friends not because of the fight against terrorism but on the basis of shared values of democracy,” he said at the reception attended by senior State Department officials, and diplomats from several countries. Touching on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations in the context of challenges facing them, Haqqani said the two neighbors had difficulties in the past but “this time around it is our resolve that the two countries will work together as brothers to make sure that we are source of comfort and strength to each other rather than a source of trouble and violence for one another.” On Pakistan-India relations, he said Pakistan has the political will to overcome difficulties of the past. Pakistan urged to ensure rights as it faces Taliban
ISLAMABAD, June 27 (Reuters) Hundreds of people in Pakistan have gone missing and women and girls have been left vulnerable to abuse as the government tackles militancy, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, said Friday. Arbour, visiting Pakistan this week to assess concern about judicial independence in her final trip in office, also said a dispute over judges risked paralyzing Pakistan's government. Arbour said the government was using different means to fight militancy and it had to decide if military action or negotiations were more effective but either way, the government had to ensure the protection of human rights. “We have seen human rights violations in the context of counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, including hundreds of unresolved cases of people disappearing,” she told a news conference. On the other hand, peace deals undermined state authority in areas controlled by militants, in particular leaving women and girls vulnerable, she said. “When peace agreements are reached the government has an obligation to ensure that the peace agreement is not at the cost of surrendering the fundamental human rights of those who then don't have the capacity to turn to the state for their protection,” she said. Arbour said an independent judiciary was a fundamental cornerstone of a functioning democratic society and a long-running judicial dispute risked paralyzing the government's ability to address other problems. “It is hijacking the rest of the government's policy agenda,” she said. “I urge them to reach a consensus as soon as possible. However, in the process of restoring the Supreme Court judges it will be important not to compromise in any way the long-term independence of the court and its remedial powers,” Arbour said. During her three-day visit, Arbour met President Musharraf, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and other ministers as well as representatives of civil society. (Posted @ 19:32 PST)
