Mobilisation for long march

Published June 9, 2008

LAHORE, June 8: Citizen activists, students, Tehreek-i-Insaaf and Khaksar Tehreek workers held their weekly protest for the restoration of the pre-Nov 3 judiciary in front of Racecourse Park here on Sunday, all the while exhorting the masses to join them in the lawyers’ long march on June 12. Members of the lawyers’ community also came in a show of solidarity.

Chanting slogans like ‘Hum judge bahal karwne nikhley hain, aao hamare saath chalo’, ‘Aini package na manzoor’, the 100 or so protestors halted traffic along Jail Road at times while they placed stickers and distributed pamphlets among the general public.

Hamid Zaman of the Concerned Citizens of Pakistan told Dawn that his group had now hired 10 coasters, each capable of carrying up to 25 people, and would also make use of 35 private cars for their journey to Islamabad.

Student Action Committee member Samad Khurram said his organisation had hired five coasters for students planning to travel from Lahore. The students also set up a registration camp at the Racecourse Park in order to keep track of numbers as well as arrange for accommodation of protesters once they reached Islamabad.

Activist Saeeda Diep said: “We want to show that we’re not against any party or any person – if Zardari restores the judges, then we have no problem with him.”
