MQM chief announces to step down
KARACHI, Pakistan, April 11 (APP): Chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Husain on Friday announced his stepping down as head of the party on failure of its local leadership to control law and order situation in time. In a letter addressed to party leaders and workers from London, he said he was shocked over the loss of lives and property in Karachi. Deputy Convener of MQM coordination committee read out the abdication letter of Altaf Husain during the general party workers meeting held at party head quarter Nine Zero. “I am deeply shocked and arrived at a conclusion that I am unable to lead the party and ask the coordination committee to look after all the affairs of the party and maintain peace in the city at all cost”, Altaf Husain said. He noted that MQM leaders and elected leadership had failed to control violence in the city. Altaf Husain said peaceful protest was the right of every citizen, but resort to violence and loss of lives come under open terrorism. “You know that I am against every kind of violence,” he added. He said the violence claimed more than 12 innocent lives including those of lawyers, journalists who were subjected to brutality at the hands of unidentified persons and property was set ablaze. Deputy Convener MQM Rabita Committee Dr. Farooq Sattar announcing the decision of local leadership at party headquarter Nine Zero said they cannot run the party without the leadership of Altaf Husain. Thousands of MQM workers and supporters who rushed to Nine Zero to express solidarity with Altaf Husain refused to leave the place and also threatened to go on hunger strike unless Altaf Husain withdrew his resignation. China, Pakistan reiterate all-weather friendship

Pakistan, China to strengthen ties further
SANYA, China, April 11: President Musharraf and his Chinese counterpart President Hu Jintao Friday vowed to enhance cooperation in defence, energy and trade and hoped that these would be further strengthened as a new Pakistani government came into power. The talks in the Chinese city of Sanya covered a wide variety of issues with a particular focus on Pak-China bilateral relations besides discussions on regional issues and international developments. Later the two leaders also witnessed the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding and an agreement. President Musharraf and President Hu Jintao had a one and half an hour-long meeting, where the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence accompanied them. Pakistan government set to undo Musharraf media curbs
ISLAMABAD, April 11 (AFP): Pakistan's new government Friday moved to lift harsh restrictions on the media that were imposed by President Musharraf under a state of emergency in November, Information minister Sherry Rehman said. Rehman introduced a parliamentary bill proposing an end to curbs on live broadcasts and punishments for journalists ranging from heavy fines to imprisonment and confiscation of equipment. “The amendments will remove the entire apparatus of restrictions imposed on the press,” she told reporters outside the national assembly. Rehman said Musharraf's regime had imposed “silence” on the media instead of improving its own performance, adding: “We will do no such thing.” ”We will put our own house in order and we will allow the press to broadcast not just live telecast but all that they feel fit to broadcast,” she said. She added however that the media's freedom “naturally places a heavy responsibility on the members of the press itself” and suggested forming a press council made up of members of the media. Altaf Husain wants peace in Karachi at every cost
KARACHI, Pakistan, April 11 (APP): MQM chief Altaf Husain said Friday he was deeply shocked and annoyed over the inability of party's local leadership to control the incident of violence on April 9, which claimed innocent lives. In a telephonic address from London, he said every party worker had the responsibility of controlling the situation which erupted after the rumours of killing of large number of MQM lawyers near the City Courts complex. “I want peace in Karachi at every cost”. “I also want you to check street crime in the city,” he categorically said. “This colossal loss could have been avoided or minimised, if you had acted in time. It was your duty to calm down the tension and control law and order in the city which belonged to you.”, he told MQM leaders and party workers at Nine Zero. He said he was unable to lead the party anymore and therefore is stepping down from party leadership. At this point, the MQM workers and leaders raised their voice and said “no, no, we do not accept this”. KARACHI, April 11 (APP): Pakistan Navy Ship Karrar, the second Multi Role Tactical Platform (MRTP-33) was commissioned into Pakistan Navy on Friday at PN Dockyard. The Attack Craft acquired from Turkey is planned to be fitted with requisite guns and missiles commensurate with its role of coastal defence/offensive operations. It is designed for fast attacks, maritime interdiction operations, contact probing and protection of coastal installations. 14 killed, 30 injured in clashes in Pakistan’s Kurram Agency
PARACHINAR, Pakistan, April 11 (APP): Bloody clashes between heavily armed groups in parts of Kurram Agency in north western Pakistan continued claiming 14 lives and injuries to 30 others, official sources confirmed on Friday. They said the clashes were taking place in Balishkhel, Sadda, Karman, Para Chamkani, Pewar and Teri Mengal areas. The tribesmen were using light and heavy weaponry like rocket launchers, mortars, missiles etc. Electricity and telephone services have been suspended, and Thall-Parachinar road is closed for the last one month. Shutter down strike was observed in Parachinar city against the indifference of the local political administration. A big rally was also taken out Friday to demand steps to restore law and order. Aga Khan to tour US to mark his 50th anniversary as the imam for Ismaili Muslims
AUSTIN, Texas, April 11 (AP) - The Aga Khan, spiritual leader of 20 million Ismaili Muslims worldwide, begins an eight-day U.S. visit Friday in Texas that will be highlighted by the announcement of a nearly $1 billion initiative to establish residential schools in 14 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia. The visit is the latest in a series of trips by the Aga Khan to mark his 50th anniversary, or Golden Jubilee, as imam of the Ismaili Muslim community. He previously visited East and Southern Africa, and will later be traveling to Dubai. Tens of thousands of Ismaili Muslims live in Texas, and many of them are expected to hear their spiritual leader speak in San Antonio on Sunday. Deposed judges issue to be resolved in accordance with peoples' wishes: Naik
ISLAMABAD, April 11 (APP):Pakistan Minister for Law and Justice Farooq H Naik Friday said that the issue of deposed judges would be resolved amicably in accordance with the wishes of the people and in the light of the Murree Declaration. Talking to Dawn News TV channel he said the parliament would decide whether the judges should be reinstated through resolution or a constitutional package. He said 30-day countdown for the restoration of the judges should begin after completion of the process of government formation which is still not completed as only 23 ministers are working where there are 40 ministries in the federal government. Responding to a question, he said the Attorney General of Pakistan was not assisting him in finalizing a constitutional package. Nisar Ali Khan Friday said that his party was not in favour of any constitutional package for restoration of judges of superior judiciary because it would complicate the issue. Gunmen kill senior aide to Muqtada al-Sadr in Najaf; 12 die in airstrikes
BAGHDAD, April 11 (AP) - A senior aide to cleric Muqtada al-Sadr was assassinated Friday near his home in the holy city of Najaf, officials said. Riyadh al-Nouri, the director of al-Sadr's office in Najaf and his brother-in-law, was gunned down as he drove home after attending Friday prayers in the adjacent city of Kufa, a police officer and a local Sadrist official said. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Authorities immediately announced a citywide curfew. In Baghdad, Meanwhile, sporadic clashes between Iraqi security forces and militia fighters broke out for a sixth day in the Mahdi Army strongholds of Sadr City. There were also clashes in Basra. In eastern Baghdad, a roadside bomb destroyed an armored vehicle, killing an Iraqi. A rocket hit the Palestine Hotel in central Baghdad and killed three people and injured seven, mainly pedestrians. U.S. airstrikes also killed 12 suspected militants. An unmanned drone fired on a group of gunmen overnight in Sadr City, killing six of them, the U.S. military said. At least 100 hurt as Bangladesh Islamists battle police
DHAKA, April 11 (AFP) - About 100 people were injured Friday as thousands of workers and supporters of religious parties fought for hours with police in Dhaka over equal property rights for women, police and officials said. The roads in front of Dhaka's main Baitul Mukarram mosque became a battleground as about 5,000 men armed with bamboo sticks and bricks clashed with police after the Friday prayers, who responded with tear gas and batons, deputy police commissioner Mazharul Islam said. “We shot tear gas shells and baton-charged the unruly activists,” Islam said, adding that at least 40 policemen were injured, he said. More than 50 protesters were also injured but witnesses said 200 were injured, including five photo-journalists as police fired more than 100 tear gas canisters, during the three-hour skirmish.. Dozens were injured in similar clashes on Thursday also. Talks with China leaders productive: FM Qureshi
SANYA, April 11 (PPI)- Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has described the talks between Pakistani and Chinese leadership as very productive saying it would help further strengthen mutually beneficial bilateral relations. Talking to newsmen he said the two sides discussed Chinese assistance in power generation in Pakistan including nuclear energy, coal and alternatives, and China has agreed to provide assistance to Pakistan. Police teargas occupied Kashmir protesters
SRINAGAR, occupied Kashmir, April 11 (AFP) - Police on Friday used teargas on stone-pelting protesters demanding probe into nearly 1,000 unmarked graves discovered in occupied Kashmir over the past two years. The clashes in Srinagar came two weeks after the Association of Parents of Disappeared People reported finding 940 “nameless graves” in Uri district. Amnesty International has also asked India to determine if any graves contain the bodies of those listed as missing by rights groups. Scores of protesters poured out of the revolt-hit region's main mosque in Srinagar after Friday prayers chanting “open the graves” and “Allah is Great.” Police charged them with batons and later fired teargas. “Several policemen, a cameraman and a few of the protesters were hurt,” police officer Imtiaz Ahmed said. The clashes came after thousands of faithfuls had held funeral prayers for the dead buried in the unnamed graves. Separately, over 400 people marched through the streets of Srinagar demanding information on those who disappeared after arrest by the security forces. Five Palestinians, including one child, killed in Gaza fighting
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip, April 11 (AP) - Israeli forces launched air strikes and a raid on Gaza Friday, trading fire with Palestinian gunmen, and five Palestinians were killed including a 12-year-old boy, Palestinians said. Early Friday, Israeli aircraft killed two Hamas militants in a strike on southern Gaza, the group said. Israeli troops also crossed the fence into central Gaza and clashed with gunmen in the area. In the fighting, a 12-year old boy was killed and six other Palestinians were injured, medics said. Later, Israeli forces fired at a group of Palestinian militants and civilians, killing two and injuring several, including children, witnesses and doctors said. Gunmen kill Pakistani intelligence official
ISLAMABAD, April 11 (Reuters) - Gunmen riding a car shot dead an intelligence agent in Charsadda town in North West Frontier Province on Friday, the third official from the government's security agency to be killed in little over two weeks, police said. The official, Khaliq Khan, head of the Intelligence Bureau in Charsadda town, was killed on his way home after Friday's prayers. Two other officials from the bureau's anti-terrorism wing were killed in Karachi on March 27. “The men in a red coloured car sprayed bullets on Khan as he walked along a road killing him on the spot,” a police official, Mohammad Iftikhar said. Sri Lanka says 26 rebels killed
COLOMBO, April 11 (AFP) - At least 26 Tamil Tiger rebels, two soldiers and a civilian have been killed in fighting across Sri Lanka's northern districts, the defence ministry said Friday. Security forces smashed rebel bunkers and exchanged artillery with Tamil Tiger guerrillas in two days of fighting, while air force jets bombed a suspected Tiger sea base on Thursday, the ministry said. Security forces have killed at least 2,750 Tamil Tiger rebels since the beginning of this year, while 158 government troops have lost their lives in the same period, according to defence ministry figures. Two Afghan aid workers missing
KABUL, April 11 (AFP): An Afghan doctor and a driver from a German aid group are missing in northern Afghanistan and police are investigating whether they have been kidnapped, a police commander said Friday. KinderBerg International, which helps disabled Afghan children, said two of its workers had disappeared while travelling between Kabul and the northern province of Kunduz. Iraq drawdown should continue if conditions improve: Robert Gates
WASHINGTON, April 11 (AFP): US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday he expects deeper reductions in US troop levels in Iraq this year if conditions improve, while the top US military officer General David Petraeus warned that more troops were needed in Afghanistan. Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee there would be a “brief pause” for consolidation and evaluation after July. “I do not anticipate this period of review to be an extended one, and I would emphasize that the hope, depending on conditions on the ground, is to reduce our presence further this fall,” Gates said. He said Petraeus should make a recommendation on further troop cuts at the end of a 45-day review period in mid-September.
