NEW DELHI, March 15: The World Human Rights Protection Council, an Indian Punjab-based voluntary group, has called for an independent probe into the custodial death of a Pakistani national, Khalid Mehmood, in an Indian jail on Feb 12.

The council filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission seeking an independent inquiry into Khalid’s death under mysterious circumstances.

The Asian Age reported that less than a week after Pakistan unconditionally repatriated an Indian spy, Kashmir Singh, Indian authorities sent back to Pakistan the body of Khalid, who died under unexplained circumstances in custody at Gurgaon’s Bhondsi Jail.

According to the publication, Khalid, like several hundred other Pakistani fans, came to India to witness a Pakistan-India cricket match at Mohali where he lost his passport. He was reportedly arrested from Faridabad by the Indian police.—APP
