CJ may seek help for SC’s security

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD, March 12: Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar may formally seek adequate security to prevent protesting lawyers from entering the apex court premises in the event of reinstatement of deposed judges, according to a Dawn News TV report.

And officials said that a meeting held at the highest level had discussed a plan to provide ‘full security’ to the Supreme Court if the chief justice made such a request.

It may be mentioned that Article 190 of the Constitution provides for the Supreme Court chief justice to seek president’s help should the need arise.

In 1997, the then Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah had formally sought protection from the then President Farooq Leghari and COAS Gen Jehangir Karamat in the wake of an imminent threat of attack by supporters of the PML-N government but the request was ignored.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court building was stormed when Justice Shah was hearing a contempt case against the prime minister.
