France to support new govt

PARIS, Feb 20: France said on Wednesday it hoped President Pervez Musharraf and the new government in Islamabad would work together “in a constructive spirit,” following a landslide victory by the opposition.

The French foreign ministry also underlined that Paris would continue to support the Pakistan government in the face of the “scourge” of mounting terrorism.

Monday’s elections “constitute a crucial stage in the strengthening of democracy and the quieting of the domestic situation” in Pakistan, ministry spokeswoman Pascale Andreani said at a press conference.—AFP
