ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: Opposi-tion senators submitted a requisition notice to the Senate Secretariat on Tuesday for convening a session of the upper house.
PPP parliamentary affairs secretary Izhar Amrohvi told Dawn that the requisition notice carried the signatures of 39 opposition members belonging to PPP, PML-N, ANP, PkMAP and MMA.
After its submission, he said, the government was bound to convene the session within 14 days.Mr Amrohvi said the members had submitted a three-point agenda with the requisition notice, including a debate on the law and order situation in the country. The other items on the agenda are unprecedented price-hike, shortage of essential commodities and resolutions seeking disapproval of the recently promulgated ordinances under which the regime placed curbs on electronic and print media after the imposition of emergency on Nov 3.
A senior opposition member told Dawn that although they had placed three points on the agenda, the basic purpose of requisitioning the session was to discuss issues related to the Feb 18 election. He said the opposition members firmly believed that the government would rig the election and wanted to take the treasury members to task.
After submission of the requisition notice on Tuesday, he said, the government would now be bound to convene the Senate session by February 25.
