SBP extends deadline for CNICs

Published January 1, 2008

KARACHI, Dec 31: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has extended the deadline for obtaining copies of Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) from all bank and DFI clients and customers from Dec 31 to March 31.

According to SBP here on Monday, this decision has been taken on the representation received from banks, indicating difficulties in meeting the extended deadline of December 31 for complying with the instructions.

The central bank has advised banks to carry on aggressive public campaign through print and electronic media for creating public awareness on requirement of CNIC for banking purposes.

The SBP has also advised banks/DFIs to contact the account-holders individually who have not yet provided the attested copies of CNICs.

They are also required to provide information on progress made on the subject on a fortnightly basis, within seven days of the close of each fortnight as per the prescribed format.—APP
