Protest rallies across NWFP mark Benazir’s soyem

PESHAWAR, Dec 30: Quran Khwani was held across the Frontier province on Sunday to mark the Soyem of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto. Protest rallies were also held by different political parties. The protesters chanted slogans against the government for failing to provide adequate security to the slain PPP leader. They vowed to complete Benazir’s mission to establish true democracy in the country.

In Swabi, the PPP and other opposition parties held a public meeting at the Kernal Sher Khan Chowk to mourn the death of Ms Bhutto. The protesters set on fire an effigy of President Pervez Musharraf and raised slogans against the government. The meting was presided over by PPP district president Manfat Khan.

It was addressed by leaders of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Pakistan People’s Party, Awami National Party, Pukhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and representatives of the lawyers’ community.

Sources said that lea-ders of the JUI-F and the PML-Q had been advised by the organisers to stay away from the meeting.

In Mardan, activists of the Pakistan People’s Party held a protest demonstration.

The protesters marched on various streets and converged on the Justice Chowk for a public meeting.

The speakers condemned the assassination of the PPP chairperson held the present rulers responsible for the tragic incident.

Mardan District Nazim Himayatullah Mayar on the occasion said the slaying of Benazir was a conspiracy against the country and the people.

In Timergara, a protest demonstration was taken out which was attended by a large number of people.

The enraged protesters marched from Balambat to Timergara Bazaar and chanted slogans against President Musharraf and America.

A Quran Khwani was also held at

the People’ Secretariat in Timergara where PPP district president Aurangzeb, Naib Nazim Zahir Shah, candidates Mehmood Zeb and Mohammad Zamin received condolences from people.

In Haripur, media personnel, lawyers and workers of the PML-N, JI and PPP jointly took out a procession in the Ghazi area here on Sunday.

The procession started from the Government High School for Boys Ghazi and ended at Jamia Mosque of the Khalo village where the protesters offered Ghaibana Namaz-i-Janaza of the slain PPP chairperson. They chanted anti-Musharraf and anti-government slogans.

The Soyem of Ms Benazir was held by the PPP’s district chapter in Haripur. Activists of the PPP, PML-N and JI participated in it.

In Karak, PML-Q central joint secretary and candidate for NA-15 Mohammad Ayub Khan Khattak condemned the tragic death of Ms Bhutto and termed it a great national loss.

In a press conference, he said that this heinous act had shaken the foundation of the country

In Chitral, PML-Q candidate for NA-32 Shahzada Mohyuddin has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic demise of the PPP chairperson and sympathised with her family members and the party workers.

In a press conference, he said the death of Ms Bhutto was a great national loss. In this critical time, all of us should be united to fight terrorism and extremism, he added.
