Pakistan Supreme Court dismisses five of six challenges to Musharraf’s re-election ISLAMABAD, Nov 19 (AFP): Pakistan's Supreme Court Monday threw out five major challenges to President Musharraf's re-election, leaving one to be heard later in the week, the attorney general told AFP. “There were five petitions, they have all been dismissed. There is only one left and that will be heard on Thursday,” attorney general Malik Mohammad Qayyum told AFP. Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) said earlier Monday that it had withdrawn its challenge to the case on the grounds that it did not recognise the new court sworn in under emergency rule. It was not immediately clear if the appeal, originally filed by PPP vice-president, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, was one of the five that the attorney general said had been dismissed. Nothing new in US nuke cooperation: foreign ministry ISLAMABAD, Nov 19 (AFP): The foreign ministry said Pakistan’s strategic arms were safe and secure under a tight command and control structure run entirely by Pakistan. “Pakistan and the US have been engaged in mutually agreeable cooperation which is essentially in the nature of rudimentary training and ideas to strengthen security and surveillance,” the ministry said in a statement. “Similarly, the equipment mentioned in a story for tracing nuclear material is of a basic nature and is needed to prevent smuggling of such materials from ports or other exit points.” The foreign ministry asserted that Pakistan's weapons were under “fully indigenous” security and control structures. “Pakistan's red lines have always been clear, which ensure that our control and safety procedures remain fully protected and secure,” it added. It said Pakistani authorities had already revealed details of the support and “there is nothing sensational about the cooperation.” (Posted @ 20:16 PST)

Pakistan asks European Parliament not to aggravate situation by “unrealistic” demands ISLAMABAD, Nov 19 (APP) Pakistan Monday asked the European Parliament not to aggravate the ground situation by making “unrealistic and intrusive demands”, saying the EU must take cognizance of the sensitive situation prevailing in the country. Reacting to a resolution by the European Parliament on the situation in Pakistan, the Foreign Office termed it “regrettable”, saying it ignores the ground realities. “The European Parliament must take cognizance of the sensitive situation prevailing in Pakistan and should not aggravate the ground situation in Pakistan by unrealistic and intrusive demands,” a Foreign Office statement said. The statement said the resolution fails to show understanding of the extraordinary situation that necessitated emergency for maintaining political stability and preserving the on-going political process in the country. “The emergency was imposed to avert an institutional breakdown and internal crisis that had paralysed the government and had the potential to cause incalculable harm to the country…the continuation of that situation would have constricted the ability of the government to counter militancy and terrorism that poses a grave threat to Pakistan and the world,” the statement said.
