Rally against new Pemra Ord

OKARA, Nov 12: Dozens of journalists from across the district reached the local Press Club to participate in a protest demonstration against the imposition of new Pemra Ordinance by the government.

The journalists, led by press club chairman Munir Chaudhry, president Zafar Iqbal Chand and secretary-general Waris Haidri, staged a sit-in in front of the Press Club Chowk.

They also chanted slogans against the government and demanded withdrawal of the Pemra Ordinance.

Speaking on the occasion, Munir Chaudhry, Nasir Waheed, Waris Haidri, Rao Mushtaq Qadir and others strongly condemned the act of the government for gagging the electronic media.

A heavy police contingent encircled the press club and restricted protesting lawyers to the press club area.

RELEASED: The district bar association held a general house meeting on Monday to welcome four lawyers who were released after six days.

Bar joint secretary Muhammad Ashraf Bhatty was released from a Bahawalpur jail while Asif Sattar Tawwakal, Syed Ijaz Gillani and Mirza Rizwan Baig from local jails.

The lawyers vowed to continue one-hour daily token strike till the withdrawal of emergency and PCO.

KILLED: A teenaged boy was run over by a speeding car in Haveli Lakha on Monday.

Reports said that Ali Ahmad (14) of Islampur, Haveli Lakkha, was crossing the road when the incident occurred.

Haveli Lakkha police have registered a case and are investigating.
