Benazir calls for neutral caretaker government LARKANA, Oct 29 (AP): Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on Monday called on President Musharraf to consult political major parties before naming a caretaker government. “This is how fair and free elections can be ensured,” Benazir told reporters at the close of a three-day visit to Larkana. President General Pervez Musharraf is expected to name a caretaker administration to govern the country before parliamentary elections due by January. Under the constitution, the temporary government must be appointed by the time the term of this parliament expires on November 15. Benazir Bhutto return to Karachi on Monday evening. Militants in Swat agree to ceasefire as violence leaves 60 militants, 16 troops dead Swat, Oct 29 (AP): Pro-Taliban militants and security forces reached a ceasefire in northwestern Pakistan’s Swat district early Monday after three days of clashes that killed at least 35 rebel fighters and 16 troops, officials said. The scale of the bloodshed emerged as the ceasefire took effect around 8 a.m. following negotiations between associates of Maulana Fazlullah and senior officials. An army official, requesting anonymity, said 16 paramilitary troops were killed Friday when militants blew up their truck in the Nawakili area. The report of that bombing only emerged Monday. Security forces backed by helicopter gunships Sunday pounded militant hideouts in the mountains of Swat district. At least 35 militants died in the fierce fighting, two local police officials said. Witnesses said they heard a couple of explosions in the region at mid-morning Monday. Local officials said police and paramilitary troops were being treated at a hospital near the district centre of Swat. A hospital official said they had also received 11 injured civilians overnight. Separately, army spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad Monday said Pakistani troops killed 60 militants during fierce fighting in the northwestern Swat valley Sunday. Karzai wants US to stop use of air power in Afghanistan NEW YORK, Oct 29 (PPI): Afghan President Hamid Karzai has demanded that the US and coalition forces fighting al-Qaida and Taliban elements in his country stop use of air power because of mounting civilian casualties and rising anger of the people against the allies and the Kabul government. Karzai told a television network that he had recently delivered the message privately to President George W Bush. Musharraf lawyer urges Supreme Court to uphold vote ISLAMABAD, Oct 29 (AFP): Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum told the Supreme Court Monday that overturning General Pervez Musharraf's victory in a presidential election would not be in the country's interests. The court is hearing challenges against Musharraf's win in the October 6 presidential election by the national and provincial parliaments, which was boycotted by most of the opposition. Qayyum told the 11-judge bench that Musharraf had already promised to quit the military by the time his current presidential term ends, on November 15. “Since the president is to give up his uniform before taking oath for the second term in just a matter of days, any interference will not be merited and in public interest at this juncture,” Qayyum told the court. Saudi King says Britain failing to tackle terrorism LONDON, Oct 29 (Reuters): Britain failed to act on information passed to it by Saudi Arabia which might have helped prevent suicide bombings in London in 2005 that killed 52 people, Saudi King Abdullah said on Monday. In an interview with BBC on the eve of a state visit to Britain, King Abdullah accused London of failing to do enough to combat international terrorism and said Al-Qaeda continued to pose a major threat. “We sent information to Great Britain before the terrorist attacks in Britain but unfortunately no action was taken,” he said, speaking through an interpreter. Hundreds deported from Dubai after strikes DUBAI, Oct 29 (AFP): Hundreds of Asian labourers working in Dubai have been deported after thousands downed tools and staged a strike at the weekend over poor wages and working conditions, reports said on Monday. The United Arab Emirates authorities took the decision after several thousand manual workers occupied and reportedly vandalised a building before attacking police and vehicles with stones on Saturday. The government denounced the strikers “barbaric behaviour” and gave an ultimatum to return to work or be deported without pay, their contracts cancelled and forbidden to return, media reports said. Turkish youths target Kurdish property in Berlin BERLIN, Oct 29 (Reuters): About 200 Turkish youths attacked Kurdish establishments in Berlin late on Sunday, injuring 18 police officers who tried to contain the group, German police said on Monday. The incident occurred after about 1,200 Turks assembled for a peaceful demonstration against the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), police said. After the demonstration about 200 people crossed into the Kreuzberg district, where they attacked a Kurdish mosque and shattered the windows of a snack shop, police said. Canadian dollar hits 47-year high OTTAWA, Oct 29 (AFP): The Canadian dollar on Monday reached a 47-year high versus the US greenback, gaining on the US currency's recent weakness. At 1500 GMT, the American dollar was worth only 95.47 Canadian dollars, while the loonie, a sobriquet given to the Canadian dollar, was being traded for 1.0474 US dollars. Haitians brought AIDS to US: study CHICAGO, Oct 29 (AFP): The HIV strain that touched off the US AIDS epidemic and fueled the global scourge of the disease came to the continent from Africa via Haiti, according to a study released Monday. “Haiti was the stepping stone the virus took when it left central Africa and started its sweep around the world,” said Michael Worobey, an assistant professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and senior author of the paper. British Muslim minister detained at US airport LONDON, Oct 29 (AFP): Britain's first Muslim government minister said he was “deeply disappointed” Monday after his luggage was searched for explosives at a United States airport as he returned from official talks. Seven US college students die in beach house fire WILMINGTON, North Carolina, Oct 29 (Reuters): Seven South Carolina college students were killed and six were injured Sunday when a fire swept through a beach home in a U.S. resort community, officials said. Four dead in suicide pact in Japan TOKYO, Oct 29 (AFP): Four bodies were found in a car filled with carbon monoxide in what was suspected to be Japan's latest group suicide, police said Monday. Two missing after ship capsizes off China BEIJING, Oct 29 (AFP): Two crew members from a North Korean cargo ship that sank in the Yellow Sea off China's eastern coast were missing Monday, after 21 others were rescued, the Xinhua news agency reported. Argentine first lady claims victory in presidential elections BUENOS AIRES, Oct 29 (AFP): Argentina's first lady, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, claimed victory late Sunday in presidential elections held to choose a successor to outgoing President Nestor Kirchner. Fernandez, a 54-year-old senator who was the solid favourite going into the elections, told supporters in a speech broadcast live on television: “We have won by a large margin.” A partial count showed the first lady with 43 percent of the vote, double that of her nearest rival, according to a tally of 12 percent of ballots on the official electoral agency website.
