Rs10m earmarked for historical site

LARKANA, Oct 11: The Department of Archaeology has allocated Rs10 million for excavations and publication of its findings at Lakhyun-jo-Daro in Sukkur. About Rs5 million will be spent on excavation and the other Rs5 million on scientific investigations and publication. The Lakhyun-jo-Daro in Sukkur is said to be a contemporary site to Mohen-Jo-Daro.

This was disclosed by the Director General Project, Special Initiative, Government of Sindh, Dr Kaleemullah Lashari during a meeting with the Chairman, Department of Archaeology, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Dr Ghulam Mustafa Shar and the officers of the Archaeology Department Mohen-jo-Daro and the Industries Department at Circuit House, Sukkur on Wednesday

Dr Kaleemullah said the site had been declared protected under the Antiquities Act, 1975 by the Department and asked the officers of Industries Department to conduct survey of the disputed plot within one week. He told them to fulfil all legal formalities within 30 days and provide an alternate plot of the same size to the allottee and ensure that the aforesaid plot was vacated in national interest.

Dr Kaleemullah Lashari while presiding another meeting of the Sukkur Museum Committee reviewed the matters pertaining to setting up Sukkur Museum.

The participants were further informed that with an allocation of Rs7.8 million, a building comprising 16 rooms in the premises of Government High School Sukkur would be constructed to shift girl students of the PPC School. Till the completion of building, the PPC School would be bifurcated temporarily so that their studies do not suffer. The PPC School building would be rehabilitated and renovated where historical museum will be established, thereby preserving and protecting the original building. The District Officer (Buildings) was directed to prepare a work plan of professional skill and start work, immediately.

Petition disposed of: The Larkana Circuit Bench of Sindh High Court on Wednesday disposed of a petition of a clerk who accused four feudal lords of pressuring him to give in marriage as ‘Karanh-ji-Chattai’ (fine for involvement in a karo-kari incident) his 14-year-old daughter to a man whose wife had been declared kari and then killed.

Shahdino Khan Kanrani serving as senior clerk in the office of deputy district officer roads Thull had filed the petition against Abdul Shakoor, Nazar Mohammed, Taj Mohammed, Muqadam Azad Khan for holding a jirga and pressing him to give his 14 years daughters’ hand, Najma, to Jan Mohammed Kanrani.

When Justice Amir Hani Muslim took the case on Wednesday all the respondents including the four feudal lords, who had held the jirga, appeared with the petitioner the girl.
