BEIJING, Sept 30: Police in southern China have arrested
a man for running a phoney Beijing 2008 Olympics website that bilked fans by
running bogus contests, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.
Computer engineer Liao Peigui, 20, made as much as 400,000 yuan (US$53,191;
euro37,514) from people he persuaded had won contest prizes, Xinhua said.
“Winners” were asked to first transfer a deposit equal to 10-20 percent of the
promised prize money into a bank account owned by Liao, the report said.
Some individuals lost as much as 10,000 yuan (US$1,330; euro938), Xinhua said,
citing Wu Yingkang, of the Hainan province police.
Xinhua said Liao had “cloned” the official Web site of the Beijing Olympic
organizing committee, known as BOCOG, making it indistinguishable from the real
one.
Liao’s arrest underscores two areas of special concern for Beijing _ cracking
down on use of the Internet for illegal purposes or to spread political dissent,
and protecting the Olympic image and trademark.

counterfeiters who use the Olympic logos without authorization.—AP
