Desert Prince rules in
feature event of winter races
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Sept 30: Fancied bay colt Desert Prince completed hat-trick of victories
by winning the feature event of the fifth Lahore Winter Meeting at the
Racecourse on Sunday.
The event was contested over 1400 metres.
The progeny of Beadouine Invader out-of-Four Aces and bred at Mirza Khurshid
Baig’s own stud farm was given a confident ride by Javed Iqbal.
He defeated Janu Manu by a wide margin of six lengths in a fast timing of one
minute 27 1/5 seconds.
Filly Lovely Gate and Harry Can View completed the frame among nine runners.
Tauqeer Ahmad-trained Desert Prince’s victory capped a marvellous weekend for
upcoming jockey Javed Iqbal, who also rode Zaheer Aslam’s Dogar Gift to a
splendid win in the opener.
In the fifth and supporting event, which was run over 1000 metres, long shot
colt Hellow Dancer just managed to get the better of Scarlet O’ Hara and Red Hot
Fire in the dying strides to land a courageous victory.
Ridden by M. Atif, Hellow Dancer beat Scarlet O’ Hara by a neck’s margin while
Red Hot Fire finished third two lengths further behind. Raging favourite Miss
Play finished close fourth under jockey Shahid Rehman. This is the second time
when a raging favourite trained by Haji Fazal Hadi and belonging to the stable
of Malik Hamid Ali Noon put up a dismal show.
Three-year-old bay filly Koshalia won the third race at ease to give owner
Junaid Rashid Rana joyous moments, who led the filly triumphantly on return to
the paddock.
Koshalia beat gelding Cross Ruff by one-and-a-half lengths.
Jockey Shahid Rehman rode Koshalia to complete his double as earlier he brought
Striker to victory in the second race.
M. Hanif, who returned from London last month to ride here, was accredited with
his first victory on Sunday, partnering Sher-e-Punjab in the fourth race.
In fact, it was the bay colt, Sher-e-Punjab, who ran fast and brought victory
for Hanif.
On Sunday, five favourite horses won in a card of seven events. Those who won
were: Striker, Koshalia, Sher-e-Punjab, Desert Prince and Dillagi in the 2nd,
3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th race respectively.
Dogar Gift and Hellow Dancer were the long shots who won the opener and the
fifth race.
Meanwhile, Karachi filly Fantastic Baby’s owner Kamal Farooq paid Rs100,000 to
Lahore Race Club stewards as penalty for late entry for the 1000 Guineas of
Pakistan, which will be run in Lahore during the winter season.
The last date for entries for the 1000 Guineas race got over on April 30.
