KARACHI : Bid to blow up power pylon foiled

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 30: The bomb disposal squad disposed of two bombs planted on two electricity towers carrying high-tension transmission lines in Gadani on Sunday, one of which was defused almost 15 minutes before it could have exploded.
An official said the bomb disposal squad of Karachi rushed to Gadani after a call from the local authorities, where it found a five-kilogram bomb planted on an electricity pole connected with a time device.

“The bomb was defused almost 20 minutes before it was set to go off,” said Munir Ahmed Sheikh, a sub-inspector at the bomb disposal squad, who led the operation.

He said the explosion could have destroyed the tower and affected the power supply from Karachi to Multan as the pole was linked to the main transmission line.

Earlier, the squad traced a locally-made bomb planted on Pole 38, which was ineffective due to its incomplete circuit.
“First we removed the wires connected with the electric pole before defusing it,” said Mr Sheikh.

He said the bomb was made from an electric circuit connecting a detonator with the explosive device. However, he said, the bomb circuit was incomplete, which prevented the device from exploding.

Three gangsters held

Baghdadi police arrested three gunmen suspected to be involved in the Lyari gang warfare and associated with the Arshad Puppu group.

An official said the area police were on a routine patrol on Saturday night when they spotted six wanted suspects in a Lyari area.

When they were surrounded, they opened fire on the police party, which triggered a shootout and ended in the arrest of three of them, he added.

“Those arrested were identified as Jamil Irani, Asif Kajal and Lateef, alias Chunar,” said Sajjad Haider, the Baghdadi SHO. “We have seized an AK-47 and a TT pistol from the culprits, who were wanted in several cases of extortion, robbery and violence.”
