Suicide blast kills at least 10 in Bannu PESHAWAR, Oct 1(AP): A suicide bomber set off a blast that killed at least ten people Monday in northwestern Pakistan, police said. The bomb apparently was in a rickshaw that was being checked by police in the town of Bannu, said a police officer. He said it was unclear if the driver or a passenger detonated it. The blast killed three police officers and six other people, including the bomber. (Posted @ 09:10 PST) Bosnian Serb republic president dies of heart attack BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Oct 1(AP): Milan Jelic, president of the Bosnian Serb republic, has died of a heart attack. He was 51. Jelic died on Sunday evening, said Bosnian Serb Prime Minister Milorad Dodik. Bosnia is divided into two ministates: the Bosniak-Croat Federation and the Serb Republic. Canadian navy reports “catastrophic volcanic eruption” off Yemen TORONTO, Oct 1(AP): A volcano has erupted on a tiny island, Jazirt Atta-Ir, 115 kilometers off the coast of Yemen, spewing lava and ash hundreds of feet into the air, a Canadian naval vessel near the island in the Red Sea reported. A Canadian Armed Forces officer said a NATO fleet just outside the territorial waters of the island reported seeing a “catastrophic volcanic eruption” at 1600 GMT on Sunday. The NATO fleet was sailing toward the Suez Canal when it spotted the eruption. The Yemen government asked NATO to assist in the search for survivors and the closet ship, the HMCS Toronto, is heading toward the island. (Posted @ 09:00 PST) Kasparov to contest presidential election MOSCOW, Sept 30(AFP): Chess great Gary Kasparov was named on Sunday as the Other Russia opposition coalition's candidate for 2008 presidential polls. Kasparov overwhelmingly won a party congress vote against five other contenders to run in the March 2, 2008, election to replace President Vladimir Putin. He won 379 of 494 votes cast, out-polling other nominees including former prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov and former Central Bank chief Viktor Gerashchenko.(Posted @ 09:00 PST)
