JOHANNESBURG, Sept 20: Fast bowling discovery Morne Morkel has been included in the South African squad that will play two Test matches in Pakistan next month.
The tall Morkel, 22, has been South Africa’s best bowler in the World Twenty20 tournament with eight wickets in four matches at an average of 11.00.
Morkel played in one Test against India last season as an injury replacement. He joins fellow fast bowlers Makhaya Ntini, Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn and Andre Nel in the touring squad.
The only uncapped player in a 14-man party is left-handed batsman Jean-Paul Duminy, who has played 15 One-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals.
As expected all-rounder Jacques Kallis has been recalled to the squad. Kallis was left out for the Twenty20 World Championship and reacted to his omission by resigning as vice-captain, saying he was considering his options.
But selection convenor Joubert Strydom told a news conference on Thursday that the impasse had been resolved.
“I know (Cricket South Africa chief executive) Gerald Majola has had various discussions with him,” Strydom said.
“Personally, there have never been problems and we’re quite confident that he’s ready to go.”
On Duminy’s inclusion, Strydom said: “JP has a lot of talent and we want to send him to Pakistan to gain experience. He will cover the number five, six or seven slot in the team.”
South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said Herschelle Gibbs would return to the top of the order in Pakistan.
“Herschelle’s Test form hasn’t been as good as he would like it to be, and I think opening the batting is his best position and that’s where we’d like to see him this summer,” Arthur told a news conference.
The team leaves for Pakistan on Tuesday, the day after the World Twenty20 final.
After a three-day warm-up match in Karachi starting Sept 27 they will play Tests against Pakistan in Karachi from Oct 1 to 5 and Lahore from Oct 8 to 12.
South Africa’s squad for the five One-day Internationals following the Test series will be announced after the Twenty20 tournament.
Squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, Jean-Paul Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Paul Harris, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Shaun Pollock, Ashwell Prince, Dale Steyn.
