Seventeen killed in Pakistan suicide attack PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Sept 11 (AFP) - A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a minibus as police tried to arrest him in Dera Ismail Khan town in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday, killing 17 people including a policeman and a soldier, officials said. “It was a suicide attack. Police started chasing him because he was acting suspiciously and he jumped into a minibus before blowing himself up,” police chief Mohammad Khaliq said. The 17 dead included a policeman, a paramilitary soldier and fourteen civilians, one of whom was a woman, he said. Another 16 were injured including four police officials. Seven killed in South Waziristan clashes PESHAWAR, Sept 11(Reuters): At least seven people have been killed in clashes with pro-Taliban fighters in South Waziristan, security officials said on Tuesday. The clashes began early on Monday and continued overnight as militants mounted a counterattack on a school where security forces had set up camp. Two paramilitary soldiers and four militants were killed during the fighting in the remote Makeen area, while a villager was killed when a mortar hit a house. Negotiations with tribal elders to secure the release of the soldiers captured in the nearby Ladha area were continuing and media reports on Monday that the men had been freed were incorrect, military officials said on condition of anonymity. (Posted @ 12:12 PST) Lawyers file appeal against Nawaz Sharif’s deportation ISLAMABAD, Sept 11(AP): Lawyers for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging his deportation to Saudi Arabia. “The petition was filed this morning,” said lawyer Fakhruddin G. Bomb damages Buddhist relic in Swat PESHAWAR, Sept 11(AFP): A bomb detonated by militants on Tuesday damaged a rock engraved with images of Buddha in northwest Pakistan that attracts thousands of tourists a year, police said. Shrapnel from the blast in the town of Malam Jabba in Pakistan's Swat district hit the rock but did not damage the Buddhist images, the local police chief told AFP. The region -- known for its Buddhist heritage and archaeological sites -- attracts tourists, mainly from Buddhist countries, The incident recalled the internationally condemned destruction of the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in neighbouring Afghanistan by the Taliban regime in 2001. (Posted @ 14:50 PST) 57 Israelis soldiers wounded by Gaza rocket attack JERUSALEM, Sept 11(AFP): Fifty-seven Israeli soldiers were wounded on Tuesday by a rocket fired into a military base by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, a military spokesman and medics said. The rocket slammed a tent in the centre of the Zikim military base located north of the Gaza Strip, wounding soldiers sleeping in other tents pitched nearby, said the spokesman.Thirty-nine of the soldiers suffered light wounds, and the rest suffered more serious injuries. Nawaz not forced to return, says PM Aziz ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (PPI)- Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Tuesday said the government did not force Nawaz Sharif to return to Saudi Arabia. In an interview with a private TV channel, he said the former Prime Minister opted to return to Saudi Arabia on his own. Replying to a question, the Prime Minister said the elections would be held on time in a free, fair and transparent manner. About talks with Benazir Bhutto, he said it was part of a national political reconciliation effort and the government is in contact with all political parties to achieve this objective. Shaukat Aziz said the ruling coalition has enough strength in the parliament to re-elect President Pervez Musharraf with a convincing majority. Police attached plasticuffs to would-be demonstrators, many of them with shaved heads and wearing Belgian nationalist symbols, and lead them off. Around 50 people were taken into custody, the Belga news agency reported. Two of the protesters leaders, Frank Vanhecke, who is also a member of the European Parliament, and Filip Dewinter, were among those taken into custody. Brussels mayor Freddy Thielemans imposed the ban amid fears that the rally might cause problems with the Belgian capital's immigrant population as requests to hold counter-rallies were submitted by a number of groups, including the Arab European League. Families of the 2,749 people killed when two passenger planes plowed into New York's World Trade Centre paid their respects at the site, where rescue workers read out the names of the dead. But unlike in past years, most of the ceremony was being held at a park near Ground Zero, the area where the Twin Towers once stood, and not on the site, where a memorial and other new buildings are being constructed. President George W. Bush observed a moment of silence in Washington. In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where hijackers brought down United Airlines Flight 93 in a field after a passenger uprising, tributes were to be held later Tuesday to honour the 40 passengers and crew killed there. Among those killed was Abu Obaida al-Jazairi, an Algerian who was the local chief of Al-Qaeda in the town of Al-Dhuluiyah in Saleheddin province, the ministry said. “Iraqi troops were air dropped on Monday in the area of Al-Dhuluiyah and they targeted Al-Qaeda,” it said in a statement. The attacker exploded a bomb-laden passenger car near the convoy. The blast also set alight four trucks, it said. (Posted @ 17:15 PST) Bin Laden praises hijacker on 9/11 anniversary DUBAI, Sept 11 (AFP) - Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden praised as a “champion” one of the September 11 hijackers in a new video released on Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the devastating attacks on the United States. Bin Laden hailed the hijacker, identified as Walid al-Shehri, as a “young man who personally penetrated the most extreme degrees of danger and is a rarity among men: one of the 19 champions,”according to the video released by IntelCenter, a US-based organisation that monitors militant websites. Shehri, a Saudi national, was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 which crashed into the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, one of the 19 hijackers involved in the attacks. Suspected rebels kill 2 migrants in northeastern India GAUHATI, India, Sept 11 (AP) - Suspected separatist rebels on motorcycles killed two migrant Indians on Monday night in Talap town, 580 kilometers east of Assam state's capital, Gauhati, police said Tuesday. The victims were identified as hotel owner Tarun Kundu and his driver, both from the eastern state of Bihar. Chouhan, an official at the academy said. The pilots were identified as 33-year-old Squadron Leader H.C. Bhagat, and 26-year-old trainee pilot Flight Cadet U.C. Pati. Armed men engaged U.S. troops with small arms fire, and the Americans returned fire and also called in aircraft as backup, it said. Six suspects were killed in a barrage of gunfire from the air and ground, the statement said. Violent protests in occupied Kashmir over youth’s murder SRINAGAR, Sept 11(AP): Hundreds of angry villagers clashed with police on Tuesday in occupied Kashmir, claiming the army had killed a student in a faked gunbattle and branded him a rebel. At least two dozen civilians and eight policemen were injured in the clashes, police said. The army denied the charge. Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, where government forces are often accused of killing and torturing people they suspect to be tied to the militants. More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the struggle to oust the Indian occupiers from Kashmir. 1,300-year-old S. Korean Buddha unearthed intact SEOUL, Sept 11(AFP): A 70-ton granite statue of Buddha which toppled over face-down 1,300 years ago in South Korea has been unearthed with its features intact. The 5.6-metre (18-foot) sculpture was found in May buried in the southeastern city of Gyeongju and has been partially unearthed after months of work, news reports said.
