Candyland win weekend bridge event

KARACHI, Sept 10: Candyland won the day’s honour by accumulating 94 victory points (VPs) at the weekend Duplicate bridge programme on Sunday.

Twelve teams took part in the five-round Swiss movement contest.

Candyland having services of Ziaullah Baig, Hamed Mohiuddin, Masood Mazhar and Hasan Askari took a good start, outplaying Ilyas-IV 23-7. However, their run was interrupted by Odds-Even, who defeated them 17-13.

In third and fourth rounds, Candyland had to work hard to beat Chandna 24-6 and Abedies 20-10. They faced another defeat from Makeshift 14-16 but were safe on points table to win the weekly honour.

Makeshift with Nasir Reza Khan, Abdul Khaliq, S. M. Ozair, Zafar Zaki and Syed Ameer Hasan finished second with 88 VPs.

They returned unbeaten winning all the five matches. The score was 16-14 each against Puris, Alliance and Candyland; 18-12 against Rais and 20-10 against Odd-Even.

Rais, though also scored 88 VPs, occupied third place because they lost fourth round match to Makeshift.

They had Rais Ahmed, Saleem Ahmed, Yousuf Gheewala and Azwerul Haq in their fold. Rais won matches against Farhat 25-5, Alliance 24-06 and Odd-Even 17-13. Earlier, they lost first round match to Mahmood-IV.

In pairs’ event, Ishaq Subhani-A.K. Bhurgri, competing from North-South direction, left others behind with 66.68 per cent score.

24 pairs competed at the Mitchel Movement event.

S.P. Jamal-Taqi Reza secured second place by scoring 61.27 per cent whereas Rais-Saleem grabbed third position with 52.93 per cent score.

From East-West direction, Anwer Kemal-Ghulam Mohammad topped with 60.86 per cent score, followed by Hamid-Zia (57.60 per cent) and Mushahid-Tabrez Dada (54.58 per cent).—PPI
