KARACHI, Sept 6: A young woman was gang-raped allegedly by four suspects on the premises of a government hospital in Landhi on Thursday.

The 23-year-old victim, a nurse at the Civil Hospital Karachi and resident of Landhi, went to the Landhi Medical Complex for the dressing of a skin ailment she had been suffering from.

According to the police, a ward boy, Asad, was doing her dressing when four of his associates — all ward boys — came into the room and subjected the girl to gang rape. However, according to the complainant, Asad did not take part in the assault.

A duty officer of the Landhi police station went on to say that Asad reportedly attempted to stop his associates from committing the offence but was overpowered by them.

Following the incident, all the four accused, identified as Aftab, Arshad, Junaid and Rashid, escaped while the whereabouts of Asad are not known, suggesting that he has also gone into hiding.

The victim went to the police station herself and reported the matter. Subsequently, she was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Central for a medical examination.

Hospital sources confirmed that the victim was subjected to gang rape saying that the findings are positive.

An FIR (160/2007) was registered at the Landhi police station.

The inquiry officer of the case, Habibur Rehman of the Landhi police station, described the complainant as “apparently mentally unstable”.

“At the time she came to the police station, she was holding a vegetable basket in her hand,” the inquiry officer said.

“However, the medical examination has confirmed that she was subjected to a gang rape. We are trying to nab the suspects who are still at large,” the IO added.
