Workers threaten to block Musharraf route

By Our Correspondent

QUETTA, Sept 1: The Employees’ Union of the Public Works Department, Balochistan, has warned that hundreds of low-paid employees of the Washak district will block roads during President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s visit to Quetta on Sept 3 if they are not paid their salary soon.

Speaking at a press conference at the Quetta Press Club here on Saturday, Khair Mohammad, president of the P&WD Employees’ Union, accused the Washak district officer of refusing to pay monthly salaries to the employees.

President of the Balochistan Labour Federation Khan Zaman was present on the occasion.

Mr Mohammad said the matter had been brought to the notice of the provincial communications and works secretary but it had remained unresolved as bureaucrats were not interested in resolving the problems faced by Grade 4 employees of the department.

He said if the district administration had any complaints against any employee or group of employees, then it should conduct an inquiry to investigate the mater instead of punishing all Grade 4 employees of the department.

He said the arrogant behaviour of the bureaucrats had forced the poor workers to take to the streets in order to lodge their protest.
