PESHAWAR: ‘Arrangements made to welcome Sharifs’

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Aug 30: The NWFP chapter of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has said that Mian Nawaz Sharif will return to the country even if President Gen Pervez Musharraf imposes martial law.

“We have decided to challenge the issue of dual offices of the president in the Supreme Court of Pakistan,” said PML-N provincial president Pir Sabir Shah on Thursday.

Speaking to newsmen at the party’s provincial office, he said the party had made special arrangements to accord a warm welcome to party chief Mian Nawaz Sharif when he lands in Peshawar, Lahore or elsewhere in the country.

He said a media coordination cell had been set up as Arshad Qureshi as its head who would coordinate with district offices over the Sharifs’ return.

He said Pakistan would not be able to sustain emergency or martial law in the prevalent circumstances.

Mr Shah said the party had proposed to the opposition parties to postpone the All Parties Democratic Movement’s scheduled public meeting on Sept 6 in Peshawar so that PML-N leaders and supporters could concentrate on making arrangements for the return of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

However, he said, they would be ready for the APDM’s public meeting if the component parties decided to hold the meeting as per the original schedule.

He claimed that all the member parties of the APDM were united against the military ruler and expressed hope that no one, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman, could support President Musharraf. Opposition parties, he said, were committed to inflicting a crushing defeat on pro-Musharraf forces in the coming elections.
