NOWSHERA: Weapons seized: 3 held

By Our Correspondent

NOWSHERA, Aug 27: Police claimed on Monday to have foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons to Punjab. They also claimed to have arrested three people involved. Addressing a press conference here, senior police officials said they had set up a checkpoint near here after receiving information about the bid to smuggle weapons.

They said a jeep was stopped and searched. A light machine-gun, six Kalashnikovs, 25 30-bore pistols, 45 chargers, 5,000 cartridges of various bores, three 222-bore rifles and an 8mm rifle were confiscated during the raid. The police identified those arrested as Khalid Khan, Gohar Ali and Mir Alam. They all belonged to the Sarband village near Peshawar.

OIL TANKER: An oil tanker was hijacked at gunpoint near an oil depot in the Taroo Jabba area on the GT Road on Sunday night.

According to police, the driver said that the tanker had brought diesel from Mahmoodkot and was parked along the GT Road, waiting for its turn to unload 25,000 litres of fuel when it was forcibly taken away. The diesel is stated to be worth Rs9 million.

So far, the Pabbi police have not registered a case.

The Oil Tankers’ Association has threatened protest demonstrations against the hijacking, and urged the police to trace out the whereabouts of the stolen tanker immediately.
